Sevilla boosted their UEFA Champions League hopes as Villarreal edged out Sporting Gijon.
While the latest edition of El Clasico between Real Madrid and Barcelona undoubtedly took centre stage, it was still a key weekend elsewhere in the Primera Liga.
And Sevilla tightened their grip on fourth place by coming from behind to beat struggling Malaga 2-1.
Malaga held the lead given to them by Felipe Caicedo on 17 minutes until Cala equalised midway through the second period.
Lolo then struck the winner just five minutes from time to lift Sevilla three points clear of fifth-placed Real Mallorca.
Villarreal extended their unbeaten run to four games and climbed to sixth courtesy of a 1-0 victory over Sporting Gijon.
Diego Godin fired the Yellow Submarine ahead after 16 minutes and Gijon were unable to respond.
Getafe were also narrow 1-0 winners away to bottom club Xerez, with Lopez Rafa netting the crucial goal on the hour mark.
Getafe were reduced to ten men when Leon was sent off in the 88th minute, but there was not enough time for Xerez to salvage a point.
Tenerife and Real Valladolid both remain in the relegation zone along with Xerez after playing out a goalless draw.
