Ivica Dragutinovic is set to miss the remainder of the season and the World Cup finals after tearing his Achilles.
The Sevilla defender damaged the tendon in training on Thursday morning, bringing his campaign to a premature end.
The 34-year-old had been in fine form for his Spanish employers this term and was looking to end the season on a high.
However, the Serbia international will now be forced to watch on from the sidelines as he domestic team-mates battle for UEFA Champions League qualification and his international colleagues go for global glory in South Africa.
A statement on Sevilla's official website read: "Very bad news for Sevilla because in this morning's training session Ivica Dragutinovic fell over seriously injured.
"The Serbian tore the tendon in his left Achilles, in such a way that he has been forced to bid farewell to a season in which he was offering a superlative performance.
"Drago will travel to Finland, together with the head of the club's medical services, Juan Ribas, in order to be examined by Sakari Orava, a prestigious surgeon who specialises in this type of injury, who has treated great sportspeople of the elite."
Dr Orava is the surgeon who operated on David Beckham in mid-March after he suffered a similar injury while in action for AC Milan.
