Gijon no match for Sevilla

Gijon no match for Sevilla

Sevilla secured a comfortable 3-0 win against nine-man Sporting Gijon to boost their hopes of UEFA Champions League qualification.

Frederic Kanoute gave the hosts the perfect start at Estadio Ramon Sanchez Piajuan as he nodded home a free-kick from close range.

Gijon's task was made even harder when striker Mate Bilic picked up two yellow cards in the space of 10 minutes midway through the first half.

The lead was doubled shortly after half-time when Brazil international Luis Fabiano headed Adriano's cross into the top corner.

With Sevilla now firmly in control, Gijon's ranks were depleted further as Jose Angel Valdes was sent off for a second bookable offence and Juan Cala tapped in a third goal shortly afterwards.

The win sends Sevilla into the crucial fourth place in the Primera Liga table, but their main rivals for that position, Mallorca, can leapfrog them if they beat Osasuna on Monday.
