Raul reveals retirement plan

Raul reveals retirement plan
Legendary striker Raul plans to bring the curtain down on his Real Madrid career at the end of the 2010/11 season, but may continue playing in the United States.

Raul recently became the Spanish giants' all-time leading scorer when he surpassed Alfredo di Stefano's record of 307 goals and is also the UEFA Champions League's most prolific marksman with 64.

Although not currently in the Spain side having been left out of the triumphant Euro 2008 squad, Raul remains hopeful of regaining his international place prior to the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

The 32-year-old does not want to remain at El Santiago Bernabeu beyond his prime and will consider his options nearer the time.

He told Marca : "It's difficult because you always want to go when you are playing at the highest level. At the moment, I have pencilled in 2011.

"Six months before that, in December or January, it will be the moment to analyse the situation and see if it's of benefit for the club and for me to carry on."

Experience

Raul has not ruled out following former team-mate David Beckham's example by heading to the United States, but will not play for another club in Europe.

He added: "As an experience, not just for me but also for my family, I could try to play a year probably in the United States.

"If I did it, it would be for the experience. If not, it's clear that I will finish my career here (at Real)."

A coaching role has also been mentioned as another possibility for the prolific forward, who has no plans to walk away from the game altogether.

He said: "Yes, sure, it could be one of the possibilities. But my future will in any case be linked 90 per cent to football and to Real Madrid."

Raul, who is set to start against Liverpool in Wednesday night's Champions League clash, is within two goals of Gerd Mueller's record of 66 in European club competition.
