Cerezo Expects Aguirre To Continue

Atletico confirmed their place in next season's Champions League with a 1-0 victory over Deportivo on Sunday and having achieved their goal for the season, Cerezo sees no reason for Aguirre not to stay on.

"It would surprise me if Aguirre doesn't continue with us,” he told Marca.

"There is nothing in the Quique Flores rumours and we have not spoken with any other coach. We had a commitment with Javier Aguirre, that commitment has been fulfilled and therefore we have no need to speak with anyone else.”

Aguirre cut a decidedly serious figure at the post-game press conference, but Cerezo doesn't think that anything can be read into that.

"I saw him after the match and we hugged, expressed our mutual happiness and then he had to go to the press conference,” he explained.

"I do not know exactly he said because I have not seen it, but also you must understand the tension that accumulates during the ninety minutes of a match in which qualification is at stake. It is then perhaps not fair to say that he expressed no joy or feeling.”

With a Champions League place assured, Cerezo is excited by the potential shown by his young team and insisted that Sergio Aguero would be going nowhere over the summer.

“Aguero is happy here; he is very content and the supporters love him,” he affirmed.

“We have a phenomenal team of young players with hopes for the future and we will confront an important challenge in the Champions League next season.”
