Yokohama target Nakamura

Yokohama target Nakamura

Japanese side Yokohama F Marinos are hoping to sign Espanyol midfielder Shunsuke Nakamura before the start of the J-League season.

Former Celtic star Nakamura moved to the Catalan club in June last year after negotiations with Yokohama broke down in the summer.

But a deal to his former side could be back on the cards and the Japanese outfit are looking to complete the transfer before the start of their domestic campaign on 6th March.

Yokohama president Akira Kaetsu is hopeful that the 31-year-old left-footer will make a return.

"I spoke to Nakamura's agent and told him the conditions that Marinos can offer," he said in the Manichi Shimbun newspaper.

"It is better for us to have him on a full transfer and that's the offer that we have made.

"Taking long in negotiations won't make the situation better so it is better to get things done in a short period of time if possible."

Nakamura has failed to make an impact at Espanyol after moving on a free transfer at the beginning of the season.

Japan international Shunsuke Nakamura has signed with Yokohama F Marinos, according to Espanyol.

Yokohama president Akira Kaetsu travelled to Spain on Thursday to open talks with Espanyol officials and both parties have reached an agreement for the transfer of the 31-year-old.

Japanese media have reported Nakamura has put pen to paper on a two-year deal after the La Liga outfit accepted a transfer fee of around Ј1.3 million.

The former Celtic star, who has struggled with the Parakeets since joining them in the summer, will link up with his new team in the next couple of days in time for their J-League opener against FC Tokyo.

Toure shuns English interest

Yaya Toure has stressed that he wants to stay at Barcelona after being linked with a switch to the Premier League.

The Ivory Coast international fell down the pecking order at Camp Nou earlier this season and reports suggested he could leave during the January transfer window.

A transfer never materialised and Toure expressed his happiness with life at Barca, but speculation continued concerning his long-term future.

Toure, who has previously expressed an interest in one day moving to England, understands that Manchester City and Arsenal are monitoring his situation.

However, the 26-year-old has reiterated his commitment to Barcelona and hopes to remain with the Catalan giants for a long time to come.

"I have heard about interest from Manchester City and Arsenal but my future is at Barcelona," he said in the Daily Mirror .

"I have spoken to the directors at the club, but I don't want to leave and my only mission is to stay and be a success at the club."

Villa stars in Valencia win

David Villa scored twice to inspire Valencia to a 2-1 victory over Getafe in the Primera Liga.

Villa latched onto a pass from Chori Dominguez and swept the ball past Jordi Codina to break the deadlock in the 39th minute.

The Spain striker then made it 2-0 seven minutes into the second half with a delightful chip after being fed by David Silva.

The goal took Villa top of the scoring charts with 17 for the season, but Getafe fought hard to try and get back into the match.

The visitors were helped just after the hour mark when Alexis was sent off for a second bookable offence to leave Valencia with 10 men.

Manu Del Moral seized on a defensive lapse to reduce Getafe's arrears with 15 minutes remaining, but Valencia held firm to emerge triumphant.

The result strengthens Valencia's position in third place, although they remain 10 points behind second-placed Real Madrid.

Getafe stay eighth with 32 points and are now without a win in their past four games.

Ronaldo eyes Rooney link-up

Cristiano Ronaldo has revealed that he would love to play with Wayne Rooney again at some point in the future.

Ronaldo was the more prolific of the pair in front of goal when they played together at Manchester United and often grabbed the headlines.

There were doubts about whether United would be as effective following Ronaldo's move to Real Madrid last summer but Rooney has excelled in a central attacking role.

The England international has been in blistering form all season, scoring 27 times in all competitions, and Ronaldo has been keeping track of his progress.

Ronaldo does not believe Rooney has improved considerably over the past few months, insisting that he has always been a vital member of the United team.

"It doesn't impress me because I know the quality Rooney has. He was always brilliant when I played with him," the Portuguese forward said on Sky Sports News .

Fantastic

"I played with him for three or four years and he was always brilliant, not just this season.

"This season he has played very well and scored many goals but he is still the same player. He is fantastic and a winner."

Ronaldo accepts that he may never line up alongside Rooney again but he would relish the chance to renew their deadly partnership.

"I hope to play with him again some day," he stated.

"I don't know if this is possible but I am really happy for him and for all the players at Manchester."

Messi expects Real challenge

Lionel Messi believes Real Madrid will remain a constant threat to Barcelona in the Primera Liga title race.

With Cristiano Ronaldo currently proving why he is so highly rated and with Manuel Pellegrini's side now within two points of their Catalan rivals, Barca know they have a fight on their hands.

Argentine playmaker Messi admits Pep Guardiola's men have allowed their form to dip of late, while Real have remained constant and appear set to push them all the way in the pursuit of the championship crown.

"I do see Real Madrid are very strong and that Cristiano Ronaldo is looking great, as he proved with a glorious free-kick," he said.

"I am sure that they will be fighting for trophies at the end of the season."

Former Camp Nou favourite Johan Cruyff criticised Barca's performance against Racing Santander at the weekend and Messi agrees the team were not at their best, despite running out convincing 4-0 winners.

"We may not have played like we normally do, but the important thing is that we won because that was the objective," he continued.

"There will be days when things do not go that well, like against Racing and Atletico. We cannot drive ourselves crazy simply because of one or two bad games though."

Pique set for contract extension

Barcelona defender Gerard Pique is expected to sign a new contract which will keep him at Camp Nou until 2015.

The classy centre-back's current deal expires in two years' time, but Spanish and European champions Barcelona are eager to deter potential admirers of the 23-year-old.

Manchester City were credited with an interest, but Pique is committed to his current club after joining from Manchester United in 2008.

The Barcelona native is quoted as saying in Spanish media: "My objective is to stay with Barcelona because this is my home."

It has been reported that the new contract will also earn Pique a pay rise to a salary of €100,000-a-week (Ј90,000-a-week).

Francis reveals Racing offer

Xerez midfielder Francis Perez has confirmed that he is weighing up an offer from Racing Santander.

The 28-year-old admits he has received a number of approaches, with the one from Racing the most intriguing.

Francis has been part of the set-up at Xerez since 1999, but feels the time may have come to move on.

"I have a firm and interesting offer from Racing," he said in Marca .

"But nothing has been signed as yet.

"It is possible that I will join Racing, but there are three or more other clubs in the frame."

Francis has not ruled out the possibility of extending his stay at Xerez, but admits a lot depends on the club's position come the end of the season.

The Primera Liga rookies currently prop up the Spanish top-flight, 10 points adrift of safety with 15 games remaining.

Barcelona proved far too strong for Racing Santander on a night when Thierry Henry was handed a rare start by coach Pep Guardiola.

Despite missing several key players through injury and losing Zlatan Ibrahimovic just before the match, Guardiola's side brushed aside a disappointing Racing outfit with ease, largely on the back of a fine first-half performance.

Andres Iniesta gave the Catalans the lead with his first goal of the season following poor defending by Racing after just seven minutes.

Henry, recalled after being frozen out in recent weeks, scored the second goal from a free-kick with his first of 2010, and Rafael Marquez added a brilliant third with his first of the campaign from another set-piece 11 minutes before half-time.

Youngster Thiago Alcantara then added a fourth with his first career goal in the closing stages.

Two goals in the first seven minutes were enough to give Deportivo La Coruna a first win in four matches, but the Galicians endured some nervy moments as bottom side Xerez threw men forward in search of a late equaliser.

Andres Guardado gave Deportivo the lead from the penalty spot with just three minutes gone after Vicente Moreno had held back Diego Colotto.

And they looked to be well on their way to an easy victory when Riki added a second four minutes later as he blasted an unstoppable drive past Xerez keeper Renan Brito.

But Xerez pulled a goal back seven minutes before the break through Mario Bermejo's header and Deportivo were forced to hold on in the end as the Andalusians gave everything in an attempt to secure a vital point which never materialised.

Sevilla came from behind to have too much for Real Mallorca in what was a bad-tempered affair at ONO Estadi.

The home side took the lead in just the fifth minute when Mario Suarez etched his name on the scoresheet. Sevilla hit back in the 23rd minute through Jesus Navas' strike but were reduced to ten men just moments later when striker Alvaro Negredo saw red for violent conduct.

Their numerical disadvantage lasted only until the stroke of half-time though as Mallorca's Ivan Ramis was dismissed for a professional foul.

After the interval Sevilla took control as goals from Ivica Dragutinovic and substitute Diego Perotti gave them maximum spoils. In the final minute Didier Zokora was handed his second yellow card of the night.

Alves happy at Barca

Dani Alves has insisted that he remains fully committed to Barcelona amid reports of interest from Chelsea.

The Blues have been linked with a move for the Brazilian full-back for some time and he is aware of the speculation.

Alves admits it is flattering to be on the radar of such a huge club and believes it would be a mistake to completely rule out anything.

However, he is under contract at Camp Nou until 2012 and fully intends to stay with the Catalan giants until at least that point.

"My situation is that now I have a deal with Barcelona and I want to stay here, regardless of the possible renewal of contract," he told globoesporte.co .

Uncertain

"But everything is still uncertain. Chelsea? It is a great club and to be on their agenda is a privilege.

"To have the interest of Chelsea is a great satisfaction because they are one of the most important clubs in world football today.

"But right now I'm happy at Barcelona and I intend to fulfil my contract here."

English interest in Thiago

English interest in Thiago

Thiago Alcantara is attracting interest from the Premier League, according to his father and agent Mazinho.

The 18-year-old midfielder is a product of Barcelona's famed Youth Academy, making the breakthrough into the first-team fold at Camp Nou towards the end of last season.

Although restricted to only a handful of cameo appearances so far, the Italian-born youngster has offered enough to suggest he could be a potential star of the future.

The pressure of turning out for Barcelona does not appear to faze him, with the Spain Under 19 international scoring his first senior goal for the club in Saturday's 4-0 victory over Racing Santander.

Barca hold Thiago in high regard and are keen to retain his services, but his current contract in Catalunya is set to expire in June.

Discussions

That has alerted other clubs to his possible availability, with Mazinho admitting clubs from England and across Spain have already made contact with him regarding his son.

"Thiago finishes his deal in June and it is normal that clubs ask about his situation," he told La Voz De Galicia .

"Some clubs in England and Spain have called me but the aim of my son is to triumph at Barcelona.

"We have begun talks regarding a new contract and they are progressing very well.

"Thiago is concentrating on his work with Barcelona and he would find it very hard to leave the club."

Braces from Kaka and Gonzalo Higuain helped Real Madrid coast past Villarreal in a routine 6-2 win at the Bernabeu.

Ronaldo opened the scoring after 18 minutes with a delightful free-kick that flew across keeper Diego Lopez and into the top corner.

The game had barely restarted when the home side doubled their lead two minutes later, Kaka stroking home a penalty after his run into the box had been halted by Villarreal defender Ivan Marcano.

The Yellow Submarines hauled themselves back into the clash with an equally impressive free-kick of their own, Marcos Senna curling past Iker Casillas into the roof of the net from 30-yards.

Higuain added a third for Real in the 55th minute when he converted Ronaldo's low right-wing cross, before Nilmar responded for the visitors.

But Higuain and Kaka notched again to bag braces, as Xabi Alonso blasted in a late penalty to put gloss on the scoreline.

Real Zaragoza's recent revival came to an abrupt halt as Sporting Gijon recorded a first Primera Division win in six games, triumphing 3-1 at La Romareda.

Goals either side of half-time from Mate Bilic and Luis Moran had the visitors cruising and, despite Javier Arizmendi's goal in stoppage time, David Barral immediately snuffed out any thoughts of a comeback by netting a third.

Defeat left Zaragoza just a point above the bottom three and ended their run of three matches - including two wins - without defeat.

An 87th minute winner from Pablo Piatti gave Almeria a 1-0 win over Atletico Madrid, easing their relegation worries in the process.

The two sides had been deadlocked until the closing stages and the game looked to be heading for a draw, but Piatti capitalised on a poor defensive header to fire past Andres Sergio Asenjo for his fourth goal of the season.

Atletico had earlier hit the bar, however the hosts ran out deserved victors to move seven points clear of the drop.

Fellow strugglers Malaga boosted their hopes of survival thanks to a narrow 2-1 win over Espanyol, as the Catalans' miserable away form continued at La Rosaleda.

Fernando Fernandez gave the Andalusians the lead after 13 minutes, and although Victor Ruiz equalised shortly before half-time, the home side sealed a second consecutive victory thanks to Victor Obinna's winner a quarter of an hour from time.

Juan Ramon Lopez Muniz's side were reduced to 10 men late on when Jesus Gamez was sent off for a nasty tackle on Raul Baena.

Meanwhile, Athletic Bilbao kept themselves in the mix for European qualification with a comfortable 4-1 win over 10-man Tenerife.

The visitors failed to recover after Jose Antonio Culebras was given his marching orders in just the 17th minute for an ugly challenge on Gaizka Toquero in the penalty area.

Fernando Llorente dispatched the resulting spot-kick and Toquero doubled the lead a few minutes later to heap more misery on the second-bottom club.

Andoni Iraola got the third after the break and, after Alejandro Alfaro had pulled a goal back for Jose Luis Oltra's side, Igor Gabilondo rounded off the scoring.

Osasuna denied relegation threatened Real Valladolid a rare victory with an equaliser four minutes from time in Pamplona.

The hosts had been denied by the woodwork three times before Valladolid took the lead through a screamer from Medunjanin Haris.

With the match entering the final 10 minutes, the deadlock was finally broken by Valladolid, and it was substitute Haris who did the damage with a superb 25-yard effort that flew into the top corner.

Manucho then drew a smart save from Ricardo as Valladolid attempted to secure a vital win, but it was not to be as Camunas headed in Punal's cross for the equaliser with four minutes left.

Report lifts lid on PL debt

Report lifts lid on PL debt

The total debt of Premier League clubs is greater than the rest of Europe's top sides put together, report Uefa.

The English top-flight does, however, account for almost half of club assets across the continent.

Uefa has released these figures in a new report carried out into the state of football's finances.

It shows that the total debt of Premier League clubs stands at €3.8billion (Ј3.4billion), which equates to 56 per cent of the total across Europe.

Premier League assets stand at €4.3billion (Ј3.8billion), accounting for a 48 per cent share of the assets among all European clubs.

What is worrying for English clubs is that the total value of the debt is so close to the value of the assets.

Takeovers

In Spain, which has the next highest debt of Ј858million, the assets are worth Ј2.5billion, three times the value of the debts.

In Italy, the debt is Ј442million and the assets worth Ј1.3billion.

Uefa's report, the European Club Footballing Landscape, has looked at the 2007-08 accounts from all 732 clubs licensed by football's European governing body.

The 80-page document's analysis of the Premier League reports that many clubs have used their stadiums and grounds as collateral to borrow money.

The report accepts much of the debt is linked to the leveraged takeovers by the Glazer family at Manchester United and the Hicks/Gillett buy-out of Liverpool.

"Some of the long-term debt is linked to new stadia such as Arsenal's, and in other cases already-built assets provide security for commercial lenders," says the report, adding that the leveraged buy-outs have been "so far acting principally as a burden rather than to support investment or spending".

System

The report did not include the debts of Portsmouth and West Ham because they had not been granted Uefa licences that year due to their financial problems.

The report comes after it was revealed that Manchester United's Ј716million debt is greater than the entire cumulative sum owed by all 36 clubs in the top two divisions in Germany.

The German Football League (DFL) clubs' debts total Ј544million.

Uefa president Michel Platini is pushing for a system where clubs in the UEFA Champions League and Europa League will only be allowed to spend what they earn.

Platini said recently: "The Financial Fair Play concept is very important for the well-being of clubs.

"We believe that for clubs to survive they can't spend more than they earn and the executive committee has agreed to introduce regulations to reach this aim."

Brazilian outfit Palmeiras have reached an agreement with Real Zaragoza regarding the signing of Ewerthon.

The Samba star is set to head home after spending the last nine years in Europe.

Having made a name for himself at Corinthians, he joined Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund in 2001.

After four years in Germany he headed to Spain, signing for Zaragoza.

Since then he has enjoyed loan spells at Stuttgart and Espanyol, as first-team opportunities at La Romareda have become increasingly rare.

The 28-year-old, who has seven caps for his country, has now decided to return to his roots in an effort to resurrect his career.

Malaga are hoping Gustavo Munua can be persuaded to sign an extension to his contract.

The experienced goalkeeper will see his current deal expire at the end of the season, making him a free agent.

The Uruguay international joined Malaga from Deportivo La Coruna last summer and has become an integral part of the club's first-team plans.

He has settled well at La Rosaleda and the Spanish outfit are confident he will pen fresh terms.

President Fernando Sanz is leading the contract negotiations and has been encouraged by the talks held so far.

"He (Munua) is comfortable in the city and has connected well with the fans and the club," he said.

"We are hoping to extend our relationship, but we are keen to keep talks private."

Ronaldo aims for double glory

Cristiano Ronaldo believes he can inspire Real Madrid and Portugal to glory after a season punctuated by injury and suspension.

Ronaldo was ruled out with an ankle knock for three months and has just returned from a two-match suspension, but is focused on helping Real beat arch-rivals Barcelona to the Primera Liga title.

He told A Bola : "I have wanted to play more matches for Real Madrid, but I have been affected by injuries and also a suspension.

"Now I am more positive and I am sure I can get back to my best for the rest of the season."

Tricky

With Portugal facing a tricky World Cup group against favourites Brazil and hotly-tipped Ivory Coast, Ronaldo has underlined the importance of a strong start in South Africa.

He added: "My desire is to arrive in South Africa in good form and to have a good World Cup.

"I hope that Portugal can prove their worth in the tournament and reach the latter stages of the World Cup.

"The draw was not favourable for us and we have been left with a difficult group. The opening match against Ivory Coast will be a challenging game.

"It won't be easy but I think Portugal can get through the group stage.

"At the moment the favourites for the World Cup have to be Brazil, Spain and England."

Mourinho cool on Madrid link

Inter Milan manager Jose Mourinho has shrugged off reports linking him with a move to Real Madrid.

The Portuguese boss is widely expected to leave the Nerazzurri at the end of the season and the Spanish press have speculated that a move to Los Merengues could be on the cards.

However, the former Chelsea boss, who is set to return to Stamford Bridge in the UEFA Champions League, refused to take the bait regarding the speculation.

"I don't enter this game," he said. "There are two difficult things to accept in the world - one is that I speak mainly only in press conferences, I give few extra interviews.

"I understand in England I would talk about Chelsea but I decided that I will only speak in press conferences - and so dishonest papers invent.

"Another thing that is not accepted - I haven't and I don't want to have a social life.

"I don't like it and on this level I want respect."

Crazy

Meanwhile, Madrid midfielder Esteban Granero has hit out at reports suggesting the Real squad are unhappy under current manager Manuel Pellegrini.

The Spanish giants lost 1-0 to Lyon in their Champions League first leg knockout tie in midweek, but Granero says the Mourinho rumours are 'crazy'.

"The squad is isolated from the rumours but to me it all appears to be crazy," he said.

"We have faith in our coach and we do not want another.

"Pelligrini is our trainer this season and we hope he will be so for many more years to come. We are totally behind him."

Valencia defender Jeremy Mathieu looks set to sit out the remainder of the season with an ankle injury.

The Frenchman sustained the knock during Thursday's 1-0 defeat at Club Brugge in the Europa League.

He lasted just 25 minutes of that tie before being forced from the field.

Mathieu was due to undergo an operation on the injury on Friday, but is not expected to return before the end of the 2009/10 campaign.

The 26-year-old had been an ever-present for Los Che this term and is devastated to have seen a productive season ended prematurely.

Valencia doctors have yet to confirm that Mathieu will definitely miss the run-in, but Jordi Candel admits the outlook appears bleak.

"The rupture is very complicated and we think, if everything goes well, he could be out for three months," he said.

Henry - I dont deserve place

Barcelona striker Thierry Henry says he does not currently deserve to play in the starting XI.

The French star has slipped down the pecking order at Camp Nou and was left on the bench once more for Barca's game at Atletico Madrid last weekend.

Speculation has mounted that manager Pep Guardiola no longer regards the 32-year-old as a key member of his first-team squad, but the Catalans boss has recently come out to quash such rumours.

Henry, who has only scored twice for the Spanish giants this season, says he has no problem with Guardiola and insists he will continue to work 'like a dog' in training.

"I have absolutely no trouble with the coach. I respect his choices," he said in L'Equipe .

"If I had scored 15 goals the situation would be different. Personally, I think I don't deserve to play.

"Currently there are better players than me. Anyway, I will go on fighting and working like a dog during training sessions."

Race

Barcelona are currently top of La Liga although a defeat to Atletico meant rivals Real Madrid closed the gap in the race for the title.

And Henry knows that the performance of the team is more important than his personal ambitions.

"The team is the most important. Barca has to win, whether I play or not," he added

"On the left flank I am in competition with one of the best players in the world (Andres Iniesta), and Pedrito, who has scored each time he has played or come from the bench.

"He is achieving an amazing season, so it is quite logical I am not in the starting XI."

Real reveal Drenthe blow

Real Madrid have announced that Royston Drenthe is set to be sidelined for 'two or three weeks'.

The Dutch winger has suffered an injury to his leg and will require the best part of a month to recover from the knock.

The 22-year-old was an unused substitute for Real's 1-0 defeat to Lyon in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday, but has been unable to train since returning to Spain.

He underwent medical tests on Friday in an effort to get to the bottom of the problem and has been informed that he is carrying a muscle complaint.

The injury to his left leg will keep him out of action for the rest of February at least, preventing him from staking a claim for a regular role at Real.

Drenthe will miss Primera Liga games against Villarreal and Tenerife but could be back in time for the return date with Lyon on 10th March.

After the interval Sevilla took control as goals from Ivica Dragutinovic and substitute Diego Perotti gave them maximum spoils. In the final minute Didier Zokora was handed his second yellow card of the night.

Nonda plays waiting game

Former Blackburn striker Shabani Nonda has decided to wait until the summer before signing for a new club.

The free agent was linked to several clubs, including both Portsmouth and Real Betis, after being released by Turkish outfit Galatasaray last month.

But the former Roma and Monaco hit-man has now decided to wait before embarking on the next chapter of his career.

The 32-year-old Congo international scored seven goals in 26 games during a six-month loan spell at Blackburn before moving to Galatasaray in 2007.

Krasic ponders summer switch

CSKA Moscow's sought-after winger Milos Krasic will decide his future before the World Cup.

The Serbian international has caught the eye of Europe's elite this season with the likes of Real Madrid, Manchester United, AC Milan, Liverpool and Bayern Munich all tracking the highly-rated 25-year-old.

Krasic's current deal in Russia expires at the end of the season and the attacking midfielder has eyes on a move to Spain after describing Real as the 'biggest club in the world'.

"For now I'm still a CSKA player and I haven't signed for anybody yet," he told Sportski Zurnal . "But I have a lot of interesting options so I will make my mind up before World Cup.

"I would like to travel to South Africa with nothing on my mind.

"Where would I move? Well based on my playing style (and) lifestyle wishes I wouldn't have any problems adapting to life in Spain.

"Real Madrid - it is by far the biggest club in the world and anybody would love to play in the white shirt.

"But also playing for AC Milan and Manchester United would be dreams come true."

Injury boost for Barca

Injury boost for Barca

Barcelona's bid to retain their UEFA Champions League crown has been handed a fitness fillip with the news Xavi and Dani Alves have both been included in Pep Guardiola's squad for Tuesday night's game with Stuttgart.

Neither of the influential duo have been given the medical all-clear to return to action as yet but both could play a part in midweek.

Full-back Alves had been absent for a month due to a calf problem while Xavi picked up a thigh injury during last weekend's defeat to Atletico Madrid that had been expected to keep the Spain international out for around 15 days.

However, both players have been named in a 20-man travelling party for the trip to Germany for the first leg of Barca's last-16 clash with Stuttgart.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who was a late withdrawal at the weekend with an ankle injury, has also been included along with young duo Jonathan dos Santos and Marc Bartra, but injured pair Seydou Keita and Eric Abidal are missing.

Barcelona made light of their injury concerns on Saturday in the league as they thumped Racing Santander 4-0.

Robinho rebuffed Barca

Robinho rebuffed Barca

Robinho claims he turned down the opportunity to join Barcelona before signing for Santos on loan.

The Brazil international has returned to his homeland on a six-month deal after falling out of favour at Manchester City.

The Samba star was a first-team regular under former Blues boss Mark Hughes and enjoyed a productive debut season in England last term.

However, injuries hindered his early progress this year and Roberto Mancini used him sparingly upon his appointment as Hughes' successor at Eastlands.

A return to his native Brazil has helped to reinvigorate Robinho, though, with the 26-year-old having hit the ground running with Santos.

No deal

He could, however, have been strutting his stuff back in the Primera Liga, with the ex-Real Madrid ace admitting he snubbed an offer from Barcelona in order to head home.

"I had an offer from Barcelona," he told Radio Globo .

"But they wanted to bring me in on a transfer and Manchester City didn't want to sell me.

"Then they wanted me on a loan deal but it wouldn't have been good to take my whole family, look for a house and be there only six months."

Pep defends Henry handling

Pep defends Henry handling

Barcelona boss Pep Guardiola his hit out critics that have suggested he has lost faith in Thierry Henry.

The French forward was again left on the bench last weekend against Atletico Madrid, fuelling speculation that he is no longer considered a first-team regular at Camp Nou.

Guardiola, though, has explained that he still regards the former Arsenal star as a key member of his squad and insists his omission over recent weeks is nothing to do with his ability.

"We have many players," he said.

"At times we play without (Andres) Iniesta and put in (Seydou) Keita instead. There are changes in every game. I cannot play everyone.

"Few people have more confidence in Henry than I do. He is a very important player and while he may have gone three games without playing, others have gone longer.

"I have not played for five years," he joked.

Walking wounded

Barcelona's injury list grew last weekend when Keita and Xavi picked up knocks, but Guardiola believes having so many players out at once is just a coincidence.

"There could be various reasons for this," he said.

"The only thing we can do, though, is ask ourselves if we have done everything right and the answer came back that we had.

"We had a long run without many injuries and the medical team are doing a great job now.

"What is important now is that we do not pick up any more."

Belhadj welcomes Barca link

Belhadj welcomes Barca link

Nadir Belhadj has admitted any player would be interested in joining Barcelona after being praised by Xavi.

Belhadj's future has been the subject of speculation for some time following a series of eye-catching performances for Portsmouth over the past couple of years.

Pompey have asked to sell players outside the transfer window due to their perilous financial position and Belhadj is one of those linked with a move away.

The Algerian full-back would be expected to attract interest and Barcelona midfielder Xavi has claimed that he would be a good signing for the European champions.

Xavi stated recently that he had been impressed by Belhadj and compatriot Madjid Bougherra at the African Cup of Nations.

Belhadj is flattered by Xavi's praise and concedes that he would be open to a move to Camp Nou.

"Who would not want to play for them?" he said in the Daily Express .

"It is a real honour for a world-class player such as Xavi to say good things about me."

Fabiano coy over future

Sevilla star Luis Fabiano has refused to be drawn on his future after again being linked with a move to England.

The likes of Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea are all understood to be keen on the 29-year-old front-man.

The Brazilian international has been with Sevilla since 2005 and reports in Spain suggest he is now looking to try his luck in the Premier League.

But Fabiano refused to talk about reported interest from England.

"I have a year left on my contract and am happy at Seville," Fabiano is quoted by The Sun .

"But things can change very quickly.

"I do not want to speak about my future at the moment because we are just thinking about the Champions League and the Spanish league where we still have a lot to play for."

Pires - Barca move down to Fab

Pires - Barca move down to Fab

Former Arsenal star Robert Pires said it will be up to Cesc Fabregas to decide whether he leaves North London to join Barcelona.

The French midfielder believes Gunners boss Arsene Wenger will be virtually powerless to stop Barca from re-signing their former youth team star after current president Joan Laporta has for many seasons made no secret of his admiration for the Spanish midfielder.

But while Wenger will not be impressed by a huge bid, Pires said any transfer could come down to whether Fabregas wants to leave and fight for a spot in Pep Guardiola's side.

"Wenger is not influenced by money," the 36-year-old told Spanish radio station Ona FM .

"He just always wants to have the best players.

"But Barcelona have an intelligent president and if they want to do a transfer, then they will do it.

Faith

"The key will be if Cesc is not content at Arsenal then he will look for a solution to that.

"At Arsenal he is the captain and Wenger has complete faith in him, which is important because he knows that he will play.

"But at Barca it is more difficult. He has to choose and it will be complicated."

The Villarreal midfielder is also convinced that Bayern Munich winger Franck Ribery will snub a move to the Premier League and the riches of Real Madrid in favour of Barcelona.

"I think it is clear that he will come here," said the ex-Marseille playmaker.

"I am sure that he will end up playing in Spain but what I do not know is where.

"Sometimes it is not all about money. What also counts is where you will be able to adapt better and who the coach is and how much confidence in you he has."

Ronaldo praises Sir Alex

Ronaldo praises Sir Alex

Cristiano Ronaldo has hailed the influence that Sir Alex Ferguson had on him at Manchester United and admitted that he always dreamt of playing for Real Madrid.

The Portuguese star spoke frankly as he looked back over his career to date in an interview with Telemadrid and reminisced fondly on his time at Old Trafford.

Crediting Ferguson as being a key figure in shaping his career, Ronaldo hailed his former taskmaster in Manchester as being a father figure.

"Ferguson is a coach who understands his players and supports them in everything he can. He was a father figure to me," he explained.

"My debut was my best moment at Manchester United."

After six years at Manchester United the 25-year-old Ronaldo chose to make a change and make his lifelong dream a reality last summer by joining Real Madrid.

"I always wanted to play for Real Madrid because of its grandeur and success," he continued.

"I didn't know what to say during my presentation. It all went well. I may not have looked nervous but I was."

Hunger

Ronaldo's desire to win has always been part of his game and he revealed that as a youngster he would cry when playing with friends if he was on the losing side.

"I would leave school, drop my things off at home and then go play with older kids. They always called me a cry baby because I would cry if I lost," he said.

"My family always gave me the strength to carry on. My mum means the world to me and she always let me choose what road I would take."

Confidence in his own ability has never been a problem and even after an early wobble at Sporting Lisbon the young Ronaldo soon began to show what he was capable of.

"When I arrived in Lisbon, where there were so many cars and people, I thought I was in another country," he added.

"The ball got away from me in my first training session, but I kept my cool, but after three or four touches, the coaches saw that I was in a different class."

Ramis leaves Celtic door open

Real Mallorca defender Ivan Ramis has admitted he could join Celtic in the future despite missing out on a January move.

The 25-year-old was reportedly wanted by manager Tony Mowbray on a permanent deal prior to the window closing.

Ramis admits he was flattered by Celtic's interest, but is now focusing all his time and energy on helping Mallorca.

The former Spain Under-21 international is happy at ONO Estadi for now and will review his situation at the end of the season.

Happy

"I am happy to stay here for now," explained Ramis.

"I have to look at Celtic and make it a thing of the past and continue to focus all my energies on Mallorca.

"But I have to say it was a great honour that a club as big as Celtic were interested in me.

"The plan now is for me to finish the season with Mallorca and see what happens at the end of the season.

"Maybe Celtic will still be interested in me and I might have a chance to talk with them again."

Maxwell eyes Barca recovery

Maxwell eyes Barca recovery

Barcelona defender Maxwell has backed the European champions to bounce back from this weekend's defeat to Atletico Madrid.

The Catalans suffered their first league defeat of the campaign in Sunday's 2-1 loss in the Vicente Caldron, with Diego Forlan and Simao on target for Atletico, while Zlatan Ibrahimovic replied for Pep Guardiola's side.

The loss meant Barca's lead at the top of La Liga has been cut to two points, but Maxwell is not unduly concerned.

He told Barca TV : "We always want to win every match, but that is very difficult, virtually impossible. It is something that happens once every 50 years.

Important

"What is more important is that we continue to play well. Until now we have had a spectacular league campaign with some great games and we have won a lot of points and that gives us great confidence to continue.

"We know that we did not have a great game [against Atletico]. We made mistakes at times when we do not normally make mistakes and their forwards were very quick and had great technique.

"These are things that can happen. It is almost impossible to go through the entire season unbeaten and we have plenty of time to bounce back."

Barcelona were without several key players in the Vicente Calderon and then saw Seydou Keita and Xavi pick up knocks that has made the treatment room become even busier.

Maxwell added: "It is difficult because with injuries and suspensions we have many players unavailable.

Complicated

"It is complicated but everyone is working to come back as quickly as possible. These are things that happen though."

Meanwhile, Maxwell has hailed Barca coach Guardiola, who has guided the Catalans to unprecedented success.

He added: "He is the most complete coach I've ever had.

"He understands so much about football, talks a lot with the players, is very open and very well prepared.

"He is a very comprehensive coach and is highly motivated to win even more."

La Liga round-up

La Liga round-up

A quick-fire Cristiano Ronaldo brace helped Real Madrid beat bottom side Xerez on Saturday and reduce the gap on leaders Barcelona to two points.

Xerez belied their lowly status by holding Real Madrid until the 64th minute, when Alvaro Arbeloa scored with a low shot after getting behind the home side's defence.

Ronaldo then marked his return from suspension by adding a second in the 69th minute when heading home from Kaka's cross after the Brazilian had got to the byline.

The duo combined again to put the visitors out of sight just two minutes later. This time, the unselfish Kaka squared for the better-placed Ronaldo to finish simply and seal what, in the end, was a comfortable victory.

The result sees the gap to leaders Barcelona cut to two points, with Pep Guardiola's side set to play Atletico Madrid on Sunday.

Villarreal beat Athletic Bilbao 2-1 to move up to ninth in the table, four points behind their seventh-placed opponents.

Joan Capdevila put the home side ahead in the fifth minute before Igor Gabilondo equalised 19 minutes later.

But Nilmar scored on the stroke of half-time to give Villarreal the win, although Iker Munian won a penalty for Athletic late on but Andoni Iraloa saw his spot-kick saved by Diego Lopez.

The game then ended in controversy with three players sent off in injury time - two for Athletic, one for Villarreal.

Athletic's Javi Martinez received his marching orders after leading with his arm while going for a header with Diego Godin, who retaliated on the ground to also get sent-off.

A melee then ensued between the two sides and when play resumed, Pablo Orbaiz was sent-off for fighting.

Valencia came from behind to secure a point in a 1-1 draw at Sporting Gijon, who ended a run of four successive league losses in the game.

The home side took a fifth-minute lead when Carmelo Gonzalez forced a corner after his shot was deflected wide.

From the resulting centre, Diego Castro was left all alone to hit a measured drive into the top corner.

Despite incessant pressure which saw them twice rattle the woodwork, Valencia were unable to find a way through until Juan Mata's leveller 14 minutes from time.

Ever Banega picked out Mata with a deep pass and the youngster tucked the ball underneath the advancing Juan Pablo, who had come off his line to narrow the angle.

Nakamura eyes Espanyol exit

Nakamura eyes Espanyol exit

Shunsuke Nakamura's agent has admitted the midfielder's future lies elsewhere after failing to fit in at Espanyol.

The Japan international has only managed 12 appearances for the Parakeets this term, with most of those coming off the bench, since joining the La Liga outfit on a free transfer last summer.

The player's agent Roberto Tsukuda confirmed he has been talking to several J-League clubs about a short-term loan move, but he has yet to receive a formal offer.

"With the World Cup approaching, the most important thing for Nakamura is to play regularly at Espanyol. Unfortunately, this is not happening," Tsukuda told the Japanese press.

"A number of clubs has shown interest including his former club Yokohama F Marinos, but at this stage, nothing is concrete.

"If he is not getting playing time, he will be moving on."

Espanyol manager Mauricio Pocchetino recently stated that Nakamura will not be part of his future plans, citing the 31 year-old's lack of desire to fit in and to learn the local language.

According to sources in Spain, Espanyol have slapped a €2million loan fee on the player.

Pique - Cesc will come

Pique - Cesc will come

Gerard Pique is certain that Cesc Fabregas will join him at Barcelona but does not know whether he will make the move back from Arsenal this summer.

The Blaugrana defender was reacting to mounting speculation that the Gunners captain could return to Camp Nou as part of the Catalan club's election.

With current president Joan Laporta wanting to do a deal for Fabregas before he steps down in June, several of his potential successors also want to bolster their campaigns.

"I still do not know if he will come here next season, but one day he will wear the Barca shirt again because he is a fan and I know that he wants to come back in the future," Pique explained.

"He is a player that should play here and he wants to come, but we will have to wait and see when that is."

Barca tasted defeat for the first time in the league at the weekend and Pique has laughed off talk that the team is panicking as Real Madrid move to within two points of them.

"There are rumours that there are doubts, but inside the dressing room there are absolutely none," he continued.

"There were many people that were waiting for us to lose our first game and now they are happy and they want us to doubt ourselves.

"But the squad is fine and now we will start to win again and continue in the same line as before."

Coach Pep Guardiola has had to reshuffle his team in recent weeks as the Barcelona injury list grows and Pique hopes that will not increase any further.

"Of course the alarm bells rang for some but at no time has it concerned us," he added.

"We have a good enough squad to cope on all fronts and if there are lots of injuries then of course that is not good. We do not need any more injuries and everyone is coming back now."

Miserable night for Mallorca

Miserable night for Mallorca

High-flying Real Mallorca slipped to a shock defeat away at struggling Tenerife on Monday.

A solitary strike from Juan Francisco Nino settled the tie in favour of the hosts.

He found the target after just 14 minutes, drilling low into the bottom corner following a swift counter-attack from Tenerife.

Mallorca did their best to find a route back into the game, but fell well short of the lofty standards they have set so far this season.

Tenerife move to within a point of safety on the back of the welcome success, racking up their first victory in nine outings in the process.

Mallorca miss the chance to move into the UEFA Champions League places after a lacklustre showing on the road, and they have now won just one of their last four Primera Liga fixtures.

Jeffren had Bhoys option

Barcelona winger Jeffren has confirmed he turned down the chance to join Celtic on loan in the January transfer window.

The 22-year-old, who recently extended his Barca stay until 2012, was very much an in-demand player prior to the window closing.

The Venezuelan-born Spanish ace was tempted to link up with ex-Barca man Marc Crosas at Parkhead before deciding to stay.

Jeffren got his chance in the World Club Championship and that convinced him he could make the grade with Pep Guardiola's side.

Interesting offers

"I rejected a lot of interesting offers and a lot of money to extend my stay at Barca," Jeffren told the Daily Record .

"In January I had the chance to go to Scotland on loan at Celtic but at the last minute I decided against it.

"My role at Abu Dhabi was decisive for my future. I want to play at the best club in the world with the best players.

"Playing at Barca fulfils my dreams and I have to take this chance. Guardiola has confidence in me. That was important in avoiding an exit from Camp Nou."

Busquets would prefer to play

Busquets would prefer to play

Sergio Busquets believes that having additional time to prepare for league matches may be detrimental to Barcelona.

The midfielder reflected on Barca's first La Liga defeat of the campaign against Atletico Madrid at the weekend and dismissed suggestions that the team have relaxed since going out of the Copa del Rey in January.

It was suggested that Barca would benefit from their cup elimination due to a decrease in fixtures, but Busquets does not think that is the case.

"We haven't relaxed," he said. "But we notice that we have more time to prepare for matches and training sessions are rather more physical.

"It's a different situation where you disconnect more from the matches. Footballers prefer to play every two or three days."

Barcelona may be playing fewer games, but their injury list has continued to grow at a critical time of the season.

Fitness problems

However, Busquets does not think fitness problems are having a major impact among Pep Guardiola's squad.

"We know that injuries are a delicate matter," he added. "Some injuries have an explanation while others just happen.

"Every player thinks about his fitness. Those of us that are fit have to give 100 per cent and play well and I do not think that any of the players are obsessed about this."

A meeting with arch-rivals Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu is on Barca's horizon and Busquets recognises that El Classico could be the decisive encounter in the title race.

"I think it will be one of our most important matches because it's against one of our direct rivals for the league title," he said.

"If the gap between the two teams is one or two points, the league will be half lost or half won in the Bernabeu. But until then we still have a lot to do."

Valencia defender Bruno is expected to be sidelined for four weeks with an ankle injury.

The right-back picked up the problem in Saturday's 1-1 draw with Sporting Gijon and had to be replaced midway through the second half.

Scans have confirmed the extent of the damage and Bruno will not be able to return to action for about a month.

Bruno will therefore miss a number of important Primera Liga matches as well as both legs of the Europa League tie against Club Brugge.

Manager Unai Emery said: "This is the worst time for injuries because the team is playing for its life in some competitions and every man is necessary."

Atletico earn final spot

Atletico earn final spot

Atletico Madrid booked a morale-boosting place in the Copa del Rey final as they progressed on aggregate, despite a 3-2 semi-final second-leg defeat at 10-man Racing Santander.

Quique Sanchez Flores' side have been woeful in La Liga this season and late goals from Xisco and Mohamed Tchite condemned them to defeat on the night in the cup.

Racing's comeback came after Fernandez Christian was sent off to add drama, but Atletico already had one foot in the final, where they will meet Sevilla, in the wake of last week's 4-0 first-leg win and eased through 6-3 on aggregate.

Sanchez Flores had urged the need to avoid complacency in the build-up to the second leg and it appeared the under-pressure manager's caution was justified when defender Juan Valera put the ball into his own net in the second minute.

However, Racing's Jose Moraton returned the favour six minutes later to level the scores, and Jose Jurado's 55th minute strike put Atletico 2-1 up.

But Xisco and Tchite struck in the final two minutes to give Racing a 3-2 victory on the night, despite having Christian sent off.

Maradona in Valdano blast

Maradona in Valdano blast

Diego Maradona has hit out at Jorge Valdano for not doing enough to help the Argentine national team.

Valdano, a former international team-mate of Maradona, is currently director general at Primera Liga giants Real Madrid.

The Spanish outfit currently have three Argentine players on their books - Gonzalo Higuain, Fernando Gago and Ezequiel Garay - and the trio remain very much in Maradona's thoughts ahead of the 2010 World Cup.

However, first-team opportunities are proving hard to come by for the South American stars at Santiago Bernabeu, hindering their prospects of featuring in South Africa this summer.

Maradona feels Valdano should be doing more to aid the cause of his compatriots as he knows better than most, as a World Cup winner in 1986, the thrills of representing your country on football's biggest stage.

Rival

"Valdano is one the biggest rivals to Argentina at the moment because he first sent Gabriel Heinze away from Real Madrid and has now prevented Fernando Gago from leaving in search of regular football," said the outspoken national team coach.

"He knows they are two players that I have in mind for the World Cup. Fortunately Gabriel is somewhere he can play (Marseille) but Fernando doesn't play and I can't call a player into my team that is not match sharp.

"He (Valdano) is doing the same with Gonzalo Higuain, even though he is scoring more goals than (Karim) Benzema and Raul.

"I think it's disgusting that an Argentinian is preventing other Argentinians from playing regularly.

"I know that many things are decided by the coach Manuel Pellegrini, but it seems to me that Valdano is not doing enough to help our guys."

New deal delights Jeffren

New deal delights Jeffren

Jeffren Suarez could not hide his delight after penning a new deal at Barcelona and explained that he turned down numerous offers to stay with 'the best club in the world'.

The 22-year-old winger has signed a contract which is set to keep him at Camp Nou until 2012 and insists he never considered leaving the reigning European champions.

The Spain U21 international accepts that he is still learning his trade and is prepared to bide his time in his quest for regular first-team football.

"When I signed the contract I felt like a first division player and a member of the first-team squad," he explained.

"Now I am ready for all the challenges that lie ahead.

Offers

"I did have offers, that is true. But the money is all the same to me because I know I am at the best club in the world and although I may not play regularly I know I will learn so much from the stars here."

Barcelona have an injury crisis to contend with in defence ahead of Sunday's meeting with Atletico Madrid, as Dmytro Chygrynskiy, Dani Alves, Eric Abidal and Yaya Toure are all sidelined while Gerard Pique cannot play and Carles Puyol is battling to shrug off a knock.

Coach Pep Guardiola is considering his options and reports have suggested that Jeffren could be asked to play at right-back again, as he did earlier in the season in the Copa del Rey.

"The coach asked me if I could play there," he explained.

"For a moment I did not think he was serious, but then I saw the chance to play and I agreed I could.

Challenge

"He asked me and so I did the best I could. I remember that I became tired very quickly and that affected me a bit, but I did all I could.

"If the coach asks me to play as a full-back then I will. It will be a challenge but I have faith in myself."

Despite the number of absentees for the game at Vicente Calderon, Jeffren is confident that Barca can come away with all three points and throw down the gauntlet to the title-chasing pack.

"We will be able to cope with them as we have a great squad," he added.

"We have a lot of players out and to win would send a message to the teams near us who are hoping we stumble."

Barcelona will be without Mali international Seydou Keita for up to a month with a hamstring strain.

The 30-year-old was forced out of Barca's 2-1 defeat to Atletico Madrid early on and replaced by Pedro on Sunday evening.

Initial tests show Keita will miss up to four weeks of action, although he will undergo further tests on Tuesday.

The former Sevilla midfielder could miss four Liga matches for Barca along with the first leg of their UEFA Champions League clash with Stuttgart.

The injury to Keita is the last thing manager Pep Guardiola needs with the likes of Dani Alves, Yaya Toure, Dmytro Chygrynskiy and Eric Abidal already on the sidelines.

Ronaldo offers Kaka defence

Ronaldo offers Kaka defence

Cristiano Ronaldo has jumped to the defence of Kaka after he came under fire for failing to deliver the goods at Real Madrid.

The former AC Milan star was just one of a number of big-name arrivals at Santiago Bernabeu last summer, along with Ronaldo and Karim Benzema.

Kaka has so far failed to live up to his much-hyped arrival while he has also spent time on the sidelines with a groin injury.

Ronaldo has made an immediate impact in Spain, although he believes some players need time to adapt to their new surroundings.

Time

"Some players need more time to adapt. I'm thinking of Benzema, for example," told Gazzetta dello Sport .

"In Kaka's case he's been hampered by his groin injury. Now he's overcome these physical problems he's feeling better and we'll now see his immense talents.

"He'll do well here because he's an exceptional player, a great person and because you do not lose your quality from one month to another."

Ronaldo's availability has also been curtailed by injury while his current spell on the sidelines is due to suspension, but the former Manchester United man is done with missing games for Real and is raring to go.

Games

"In the games that I've played I think I've done well," he continued. "Now I just want to play more regularly.

"I've already missed 13 games because of injury and suspension and I hope now that they let me play.

"The important thing is not how you begin, but how you finish."

Bayern Munich ace Franck Ribery is continually linked with a move to Real, but Ronaldo says it is not down to him whether they break the world record for the France international.

Ronaldo became the world's most expensive footballer when Real paid Ј80million for his services last summer, although Ribery is now being linked with a massive €100million (Ј86m) move.

"It's difficult to say no to Real Madrid. I wasn't able to do it, but each player has his own story.

"€100m for him? I'm not the president. I cannot pay anything. I can only say that he's a great player and I like playing with great players."

Xavi adds to Pep headache

Xavi adds to Pep headache

Barcelona have been dealt another blow with the news that Xavi is set to be sidelined for a fortnight.

The influential midfielder was forced off towards the end of Barca's 2-1 defeat to Atletico Madrid on Sunday.

Tests have since revealed that the Spain international has suffered a thigh injury and is likely to be out of action for up to 15 days.

"I noticed a problem during the match and after speaking to the doctor I decided to go off to avoid making the problem worse," said Xavi.

"We are experiencing a difficult time with injuries at present but the squad has the character and quality to cope."

Options

Xavi's absence will be keenly felt by Barca, though, as they have seen their options in the middle of the park take a battering.

Seydou Keita also limped out of the Atletico defeat at Vicente Calderon, while Yaya Toure missed the game through injury.

Sergio Busquets picked up a yellow card in the shock weekend setback, Barca's first league defeat of the season, and he must now serve a suspension.

All of this means Pep Guardiola is set to be missing key men heading into a crucial stage of the season.

Barca are due to face Racing Santander, Malaga and Almeria in the Primera Liga over the next three weeks, while also taking on German outfit Stuttgart in the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League.

Bougherra focused on football

Madjid Bougherra insists he is focused on helping Rangers win the SPL title this season and nothing else.

The former Charlton and Sheffield Wednesday defender has been linked with a move to European giants Barcelona.

However, Bougherra is not sidetracking himself with the speculation and is concentrating only on title glory.

The French-born ace will go to this summer's World Cup finals with Algeria and he knows a good season in Scotland will boost his career.

Concentrate

"I've very concentrated on my football," he told Sky Sports News . "We'll see after the World Cup.

"I don't know what'll happen. I hope to sign a new contract with Rangers.

"I'm concentrating on the title. I know if I do well and do better I think it could be a good thing for me.

"My agent is away. I told him I'm concentrating on the season. I don't want any distractions.

"I'm here. I want to win the title again."

Guardado rejects transfer talk

Guardado rejects transfer talk

Andres Guardado has dismissed speculation linking him with a move away from Deportivo La Coruna.

Reports have suggested in recent days that a number of clubs are considering a summer swoop for the Mexican midfielder.

Tottenham have been credited with an interest, while Fiorentina were also rumoured to be chasing his signature.

Guardado is aware of the transfer talk but insists there is plenty of time for his future to be resolved as he focuses on the Primera Liga season and then the World Cup.

"Last week many things were said, some were invented and others were not," he told diario.com.mx .

"I am at Deportivo and don't want people to get me wrong, thinking I want to go away.

"(These rumours) should be taken with caution, there is still so much time to the end of the season and then there will be the World Cup and other important things for me."

Real always Canales' priority

Real always Canales priority

Sergio Canales' father and agent insists he never put his son up for auction and says the teenager always wanted to join Real Madrid.

Title-chasing Real confirmed on Friday night that a deal had been struck for Canales to move to the Santiago Bernabeu on a six-year contract from Racing Santander in the summer.

Canales' remarkable progress in recent weeks had seen the schemer linked with several major clubs, including Premier League duo Chelsea and Manchester City.

The 18-year-old's father Angel Canales has dismissed claims the move was financially motivated and is adamant the player's priority was to sign for Real.

"He's had it very clear from the start, he wanted to play at Real Madrid," said Angel Canales, the player's father and representative.

"I never put my son up for auction as some have said. For me I was obliged to listen to all the clubs, simply out of courtesy. I've never asked for anything."

Surprised

In his last seven Primera Division matches, Canales has netted five goals, while he also scored another in Racing's 5-1 aggregate demolition of Osasuna in the Copa del Rey quarter-finals last month.

Angel Canales added in AS : "I have to admit that I've been surprised by the progress of Sergio. A few months ago he was playing in the Segunda Division B and now look at him.

"He's been fortunate to have scored some high-quality goals and that's what sells."

No fee has officially been confirmed for the transfer, but media reports in Spain suggest Real will initially pay in the region of 5million euros for Canales.

Racing president Francisco Pernia said: "It's been the best solution both for the player and for Racing. We are happy with the agreement. We've put in a series of success-related clauses that I'm sure will also benefit us."
