Josemi To Leave Villarreal

Josemi took part in just one Liga game last season, playing all 90 minutes during his side's 4-3 win over Deportivo.

Although his campaign was dogged by injury, it's also indicative of his status at El Madrigal, where he is largely seen as surplus to requirements. As such, he's looking to move on.

He said, "I just met with José Manuel Llaneza [CEO of Villarreal] and I raised the topic of my future, which will see me play next year at another club," he said.

"I'm eager to avoid another season like this, in which I was unable to play.

"The club told me that if I can find a valid option elsewhere they won't stand in my way, so now I'll need to wait and see if suitable options present themselves."

Mutually Beneficial

The Málaga-born stopper felt that this was the best course of action for both himself and the club.

"I have two more years of my contract and I think that this is best for both of us - I want to play and they want to recover some of their investment," he said.

"Valencia's interest? This isn't something I've heard personally - it's just from agents and the press. I can't deny the excitement of having such a club supposedly looking at me, but I can't say anything more."

The 28-year-old concluded by saying that his injury situation was progressing nicely and that he should be able to complete pre-season with normality.

Laporta Goes On The Defensive

Eschewing the chance to fight back at his assailants, Laporta instead assured all in Catalunya that the petition process will be respected.

The president is currently under attack from a group that has gathered over 9,000 signatures - several thousand more than mandated by the club's rules - to launch a 'motion of censure' against him.

With the petition being presented today, Laporta took the time to announce his thoughts.

"At the request of the vote of censure, this morning I asked the president of the Catalan Football Federation to appoint the delegate who will preside over matters," he began.

"Both the board and myself have maintained an attitude of utmost respect for the collection of signatures. We've given an example of democratic culture, and we will keep on doing so."

He also requested "respect for those socios who have given support to the motion. The board will continue to ensure that the process remains democratic."

The Offensive

However, he did take time to launch his own views of his tenure at Camp Nou.

Discussing what would happen if asked to defend himself at the tribunal, he said, "I promise to defend the good work carried out during our mandate. We are convinced that, on balance, these five years have been good. We endorse our history. And we believe that we deserve to complete the term allotted to us.

"We have hope, strength and desire in continuing to run the club. We have acted with the utmost honesty, loyalty to our principles, and have run risks in doing so. We've always met problems head-on.

"We're proud to drive the transformation and modernisation of the club, keeping it at the forefront worldwide, and raising awareness of the values of FC Barcelona all over the world.

"FC Barcelona is today much better than it was when we took over in 2003, and we work with the sole purpose of allowing the next president to take over a club fundamentally better than it is."

Ronaldo's Godfather: He's Choosing Madrid

According the his Godfather, Real Mais an offer that Cristiano Ronaldo can't refuse...or at least that is what Marca would hasve us believe in its latest attempt to promote the player's transfer from Manchester United to the Bernabeu.

The latest report (rumour?) comes just a day after Real Madrid appeared to admit defeat in their public pursuit of English football's Player of the Year, saying they understood their prime target was not available for sale this summer.

But Marca have declared the transfer on again, citing an interview that Fernao Sousa gave in Portugal.

They have depicted Godfather Sousa as a highly influential person in Ronaldo's life to invest his words with great significance.

They claim it was Sousa who advised the young Ronaldo to move to Sporting at the age of 11, then encouraged him to move to Old Trafford in 2003 - and is now urging him to move to El Santiago Bernabeu. Apparently it will be made public in July.

“Cristiano must take advantage of this opportunity to go to Real Madrid,” Sousa is said to have told Marca.

“I think that he has decided he will go to Real Madrid, but he will not say it until the European Championship is over.

“Cristiano Ronaldo’s top objective is to win everything, it is what he wants the most, especially the Champions League and then going as far as possible with Portugal during Euro 2008."

Of course, United have already threatened to report Real Madrid to Fifa, and Sir Alex Ferguson has accused them of using Marca as a propaganda weapon to help secure incoming transfers.

I guess we'll have to wait until July to pick the bones out of this one...

Marca: United's Angry Letter To Madrid

Following on from the Red Devils' public statement about Madrid's conduct, this personal letter appears to be a step further.

Allegedly signed by David Gill, the Old Trafford CEO, it states that not only are United unwilling to sell Ronaldo at present, but that they will not do so even if Cristiano Ronaldo publicly asks for a move.

Furthermore, Gill requests that Madrid publicly renounce their desire to land the Portuguese ace.

To Marca, of course, this betrays nervousness on the part of the English side.

The Godfather

Meanwhile, Marca claims that Ronaldo's godfather, one Fernao Sousa, has said that Cristiano is on the verge of deciding that the time is right for a move.

He said, "Cristiano must seize this opportunity to go to Real Madrid.

"I think that he's already decided to do so, but he'll wait until after the Euros before saying anything.

"His main goal is to win everything. That's what he wants - the Champions League in particular, but also going all the way with Portugal at Euro 2008."

Aragonés Tips Italy And Bemoans Fatigue

The veteran coach was asked who he could see winning the European Championships in Austria and Switzerland if the Spanish were out and he plumped for the Azzurri and Luiz Felipe Scolari's Iberian neighbours.

"For me, Italy is the favourite, then Portugal, but there are others that nobody has mentioned like Romania. But that is just my opinion. In reality there are 12 or 14 teams that could win it," Aragonés said.

Looking ahead to the group stage, the trainer explained that he expects a tough time and recognised that all three teams that Spain will play have a chance of doing well.

"Sweden will be difficult, as will Russia and Greece. We always say that it is easy after seeing the draw, but now we are close it never easy. The Swedes, for example, have more chance of beating maybe because they have traditionally gone further in major competitions," he explained.

Aragonés then bemoaned the timing of the championships and hopes that the rest and recuperation time that he has allowed his squad will help them perform afte such a long season.

"We are not in the best moment, but most teams will not be. These competitions do not come at the best time for the players physically speaking after the league, cup and Champions League," he continued.

"The work we have done to help them rest should be good, but we know it is the same for everyone."

Spain are due to play Peru at the weekend and then take on the United States before travelling to their base for the tournament and Aragonés thinks he has found the right balance.

"It is difficult to be ready if we overdo things. Other teams prefer to have three games, but I have made my mind up on two because of how the European Championships are and the fact the player need mental rest over physical," he added.

Rennes Look To Sinama-Pongolle

Recreativo Huelva's forward Florent Sinama-Pongolle remains one of the most sought after forwards for French clubs. PSG and Saint-Étienne have already had their interest in the player well documented but Rennes are also believed to have joined the list of Ligue 1 suitors.

The Réunion-born 23 year-old scored 10 times for Recreativo last season but has previously enjoyed success in Ligue 1. Le Havre was the quick forward's first senior club and where he attracted the attention of Liverpool, who subsequently signed him.

Although relatively unsuccessful in England, the player found a new lease of life in Spain. Sinama-Pongolle could also choose to remain on the Iberian peninsula as Valencia, Real Zaragoza and Atletico Madrid have all expressed an interest in the player.

Jimmy Briand, a similar kind of player, has spearheaded Rennes' attack this season but has failed to progress a great deal after initially looking a great prospect for the Bretons.

The former French under-21 international has been linked with a move to Monaco adding credence to the potential arrival of Sinama-Pongolle at the Stade Route de Lorient.

Monaco, who are also thought to be interested in midfielder Fabrice Abriel of Lorient, are desperately short of forwards and badly need to increase both their depth and quality in that particular area of the field.

Paulo Assunção Leaves Porto

The Portuguese club had expressed their wish to keep in the squad the 28-year-old, who has been linked with a move away from Estádio do Dragão in the summer.

But Assunção has decided to leave the Dragons, terminating his contract with Porto without just cause under the Webster ruling.

According to Article 17 of FIFA's transfer regulations, any player who signs a contract when aged under 28 is able to unilaterally break that contract after a period of three years.

It is believed that Spanish side Atletico Madrid are interested in signing Assunção, now a free agent.

The Brazilian midfielder, who returned to Porto in 2005 after a one-year stint in the reserve squad in 2000, made 38 appearances for the Dragons this season.

Valencia Seek Elmander

It may not be a like-for-like change but Johan Elmander has been lined up by Valencia as a potential replacement for David Villa.

Bustling centre forward Elmander remains on the shopping list of many big clubs but is not considered quality enough to pay big money for nor is he considered value for money.

Valencia are believed to be willing to pay anything up to €7 million for the Swedish international forward, however le Téfécé are thought to be holding out for considerably more than that for their prize asset, who's under contract until 2012.

Unlike David Villa, Elmander is not such a potent threat in front of goal. Rather his strengths lie in holding the ball up and bringing others into play, but nonetheless he has a keen eye for the net when in good form.

Many of Europe's top clubs are believed to be keeping an eye on the powerful forward. Barcelona, Juventus and Liverpool have all watched the forward, who has just turned 27.

Galatasary, Hamburg and Manchester City have all been keeping tabs on the forward too and are perhaps more likely destinations. All three may well be put off by Toulouse's excessive demands for the player.

Piqué At Barça To Win Champions League

The Spanish defender re-joined his boyhood club from Manchester United this week in a deal reported to be worth an initial £5 million, after struggling to attain a regular starting spot at Old Trafford.

And the talented youngster admits that he will complete a lifelong dream by playing for the Blaugrana next season.

“It is a dream I have had since I was small. I used to go the ground when I was young and played at all youth levels until I was 17, and when I left I knew there was a risk I’d never come back,” he told the club’s official website.

“Returning is a dream come true and playing for Barca is something you can’t describe in words. It’ll be so nice.”

Above all, though, he's after continental success.

“Of course I am hungry to win, if I'm not at 21... I have won the league and Champions League with Manchester and if I can do that with Barça that would be even better, because it’s my team,” he beamed.

“It would be great to win the league, the Champions League, everything we possibly can. People always remember you for the things you have won.”

Messi Messiah

Piqué, who is yet to win a full Spanish cap, is keen to link up with Lionel Messi with his new club.

“Yes, yes [it will be great to play with Messi],” he added.

“I remember when we were young and wondering if we could do this professionally. What he does now is what he always did, and it was and will be a pleasure to be with him.”

The former Manchester United man, who was an unused substitute in Moscow for the Champions League victory over Chelsea, feels that he will achieve more success under new head coach Josep Guardiola, who he has backed to succeed.

“I didn’t know him personally when I was young but he was one of my heroes when my dad brought me to games, he always spoke about him, and what a leader he is,” Pique stated.

“It is important to have a coach like that. There is trust and with him we will win titles and the fans will be proud of us.”

Proud, Very Proud

The tall defender concluded by discussing the differences between the Spanish and English cultures and discussed the influence that Sir Alex Ferguson had had on his budding career.

“It’s a different culture. Professionally in Spain I have only been on loan to Zaragoza but you can still make comparisons,” he said.

“There is a distance between Manchester and Zaragoza. Ferguson was more like a father to the players than a manager. In fact a manager is not the same as a coach, which is what Carlos Queiroz did - he prepared the training sessions.

“Sir Alex Ferguson is closer, he is about the way you live and feel inside the club.”

Spurs To Make £3m Diaz Bid

29-year-old Argentine Díaz is set to become the latest defensive addition to the White Hart Lane squad, according to The Sun.

With Alan Hutton, Jonathan Woodgate and Chris Gunter already signed by the Spaniard, Ramos continues to look to strengthen what he perceives as the club’s weak area with another reliable purchase.

Díaz, who has been capped four times by his country, is a strong centre-back, but one that can also play out on the right.. The former Boca Juniors man was an important factor for Getafe as they had a strong campaign in both La Liga and the UEFA Cup, having only joined the Spanish side in 2007.

And Ramos sees the experienced player as a solid squad player to cover for his side in instances of injury and poor form as he exercises his vast array of knowledge and contacts in the Spanish top flight.

According to The Sun, Díaz would welcome a move to England, presuming the two clubs can come to an agreement – with the fee set to be similar to the 4 million Euros paid by Getafe last year.

Spurs are still being linked to big name signings such as Samuel Eto’o, with Croatian star Luka Modric already signed for £18.6 million this summer as they look to build on the Carling Cup success already achieved this year.

Jorge Messi: Leo's Olympics? Up To Barça

According to Jorge, Lionel - who is eager to play at the Games - will not hold the final decision as to whether or not he travels to China.

Instead, Jorge told Telam that it's all up to Barcelona.

"The decision is in their hands," he said.

"The club is looking at the legislation to see whether or not they are required to give up Leo, and he'll have to do what they say - both the club and the AFA."

As for the player himself, he will "do what is required to avoid being sanctioned by any party."

Having met with club technical secretary Txiki Begiristain, Jorge admitted that it's "natural" for Barça to seek to retain one of their stars, and that they will look for an "argument" that allows them to do so.

Keita Living The Dream At Barca

The Mali international is the first signing of new coach Josep Guardiola, arriving from Sevilla for around €14 million.

The 28-year-old has made a huge impact since his move from French side RC Lens last summer, swiftly establishing himself as one of the best box-to-box players in Spain.

Keita is thrilled to join the Blaugrana, insisting it is a great opportunity to fulfil his ambitions of succeeding at the very highest level.

“I’m very happy,” he said. “Signing for Barça is a dream come true.

“FC Barcelona is a big club for any player that wants to go a long way. We’d all like to play one day for Barcelona and I’m very pleased to join this great club and above all I hope to give everything I’ve got to help the team get good results.

“[Pep Guardiola and I] haven’t had the chance to see each other yet but I’ve been able to talk to ‘Titi’ [Henry] and some other players. He’s starting a new project and I’m also new so I think we’ll get on well and everything will go fine.”

Desire

Keita arrived in Andalusia with a reputation as a strong holding player, but has shown considerable attacking qualities and the ability to score from outside the box.

The former Marseille man believes he can contribute in a wide array of areas, but insists his focus first and foremost is on his holding duties.

“Well I’m certainly a defensive midfielder and in that position I like to defend and help out my team-mates,” he said.

“But I’m also lucky enough to score the occasional goal, I’m pretty comfortable on the ball as I’ve played a bit in an attacking midfield role.

“But the most important thing for me is the desire to win and fight for the team. When there’s desire, everything is possible.”

Confident

Some have queried whether Keita would suit Barca’s attacking, possession-based game, and also whether he is a necessary addition given the presence of Yaya Toure.

But the ex-Lorient man is confident of slotting into the Barca midfield without any issues, insisting his defensive qualities will help the team express themselves offensively.

“I think [I'll succeed] because a team like Barça needs to have possession but it also needs to defend well and I think I can help the team a lot in this aspect,” he said.

“I’ve seen Barça play loads of matches. In addition, there’s Touré Yaya, who I know pretty well and who plays in midfield. I hope to give my all and help to defend well.

“As well as attacking you have to defend well and that’s why there has to be a balance. I hope to adapt rapidly to the system at FC Barcelona.”

Proud

Keita is one among many African-born stars making their name in the upper echelon over the last few years, joining the likes of team-mates Toure and Samuel Eto’o.

However, he is the first Malian to ever play for Barca – a fact that makes him feel honoured.

“I’m very proud I had other offers but I’ve wanted to come to Barcelona for some time and when I had the chance to join other teams I did everything possible to come here,” he said. “In addition, Barça wanted me and that helped. It’s a club I’ve always liked.

“It’s true that there have been African players in the big clubs for the last few years and that shows that African football has progressed a lot. We players have become aware of the qualities that we can bring to our teams.

“I hope this keeps on because African players always try and give our best in our respective teams.”

Grateful

Keita remains grateful to Sevilla for giving him the opportunity to shine on the big stage, and admits it is not without sadness that he leaves Andalusia.

“For everybody, Barça is a great club, a team everyone wants to play for,” he said. “I was lucky enough to come to Spain with Sevilla, which is also a great club, a club that gave me everything and helped me grow.

“Now I’m in Barcelona and I’m very happy but I’m very grateful to all the Sevilla directors and to the fans, who have always supported me. But in life you have to make choices.

“I’m sad to leave Sevilla, but at the same time I’m very happy to sign for Barcelona, because it’s an option that you can’t turn down even though you’ve had everything at Sevilla. The truth is I’m very happy to be here because it’s what I’ve always wanted.”

Easier

Keita is looking forward to running out on the Camp Nou in the famous Blaugrana strip, and is certain it will be more enjoyable than past experiences as a visitor.

“I’ve played here but against Barça,” he said. “It’s a very big stadium, with a lot of people, but when I was here it was as an opponent and it was very difficult. This time I’ll be wearing the Barça colours so it’ll be easier.”

Villarreal Reject First Barça Cáceres Offer

The former Valencia stalwart stated that the first bid placed by the blaugrana did not meet his valulation of the young Uruguayan.

He said, "This morning we received an offer from Barcelona for our player, Martín Cáceres, but we deemed it unsatisfactory and have made that known to Barcelona."

It seemed as though this could be game over for Barça, given that only yesterday Roig stated that any club wishing to land the ex-Recreativo loanee must pay up his entire €20m release clause.

However, today he seems more amenable to the prospect of a bit of haggling.

"We're in a situation where we're going to negotiate with Barcelona," he revealed.

"If their final offer is one that we think is a good option then we can take it; if not, the player has four more years of contract with us and will remain a Villarreal player."

Real Madrid are also said to be interested, with sporting director Predrag 'Pedja' Mijatović having met with the 21-year-old's agent, Daniel Fonseca, earlier in the month.

However, the blancos have since signed (and loaned out) Ezequiel Garay of Racing Santander.

Zanetti Reveals Messi Dream

The 34-year-old Zanetti again had a brilliant season with the Nerazzurri, leading them to a third straight Scudetto victory.

Mancini Or Mourinho?

In an interview with the Corriere dello Sport, Zanetti was first asked whether it would be Roberto Mancini or Jose Mourinho who would be sitting on the Inter bench next season.

'This answer only the coach and the president can decide,” Zanetti stated.

“What Mancini has done in recent years is there for all to see. I am convinced that Moratti will choose the best solution to keep Inter at the top in the future."

Mancini Enemies?

Mancini has had a number of reported falling outs this season with the likes of Luis Figo, Patrick Vieira and Hernan Crespo. Zanetti was asked if the dressing room was against the coach.

"In every team there are those who are discontented,” he explained.

“However a group can not get to win the championship if it is divided or if it is against coach. We were and are with him."

Good Season?

The Inter skipper was asked whether he was happy with Inter’s season.

"I would have signed for this at the beginning of the season, although I would have liked to have gone further in the Champions League too," he pointed out.

“The season has been positive and with all the injury problems we have had that have penalized us it was difficult to do any better."

Messi Dream

Finally Il Trattore was asked if there was one player he dreamed about bringing to San Siro, who that player would be.

"Messi is my dream and Moratti thinks exactly the same, but the chance of Leo arriving is difficult. Maybe I try to convince him in these days with the national team,” he concluded.

Javi García: I Won't Leave Madrid Again

Javi, who came through the youth ranks at Real Madrid Castilla, seemed destined for great things when he broke through to the first team as a 17-year-old back in 2004.

He managed three Liga appearanceds in the 2004-05 campaign - including one start - but from then on was used almost solely by Castilla, moving up only for matches outside the league.

Thus when the chance came for him to grab first team football last season he took it, securing a transfer to Osasuna. But after playing 24 Liga matches for the rojillos, it appears he's back to square one - and he couldn't be happier.

Madrid have exercised their re-buy option for the 21-year-old defensive midfielder, and this time he's eager to make a go of it.

He told Marca, "[Madrid] contacted me and said that, in principle, I'd be in the first team squad, and that's why I'm here.

"It's true that there are many twists and one can never know what last-minute signings will come or what will happen at Real Madrid, but I'm going to do everything I can to stay among the 25 [first team players]."

You Are The Quarry

In the past he has stated that it would be "difficult" for him, as a cantera product, to succeed in Madrid, also once stating that he'd prefer to avoid the fact of Roberto Soldado, another Osasuna loanee who has so far failed to make the grade in the capital.

"Each case is different, though," he protested. "Real Madrid play 70 games a year... and I will fight to the death to be among the 25.

"My chance here in Madrid must be exhausted to the fullest. Madrid are one of the best teams in the world and for any boy the greatest dream is to play for them. Unless I'm given a kick in the butt, I'm going nowhere."

Aragonés Linked With América

Speculation over Aragonés' future in charge of the national team has been rife in recent months, with reports suggesting that former Real Madrid coach Vicente Del Bosque has been lined up to replace the 69 year old after the tournament.

Aragonés has himself offered his resignation from the position in the past, most notably following the 2004 World Cup, and could be set for a move back to club management by the end of the summer.

The experienced coach is hopeful that a Spanish team will be interested in his services, but if not, it looks as if he can count on an offer from América, who have apparently approached his agent Emilio Azcárraga to declare their interest.

América sacked Argentine coach Daniel Brailovsky in February after a poor start to the 2008 Clausura and although stand-in coach Juan Antonio Luna has taken them to the semi-finals of the Copa Libertadores, he will not be given the job on a full-time basis.

President Guillermo Cañedo is determined to bring in a high-profile coach in time for the 2008 Apertura tournament and feels that Aragonés would be the ideal man to lead them back to the top of the Mexican football pyramid.

Edmilson States Title Ambitions

Edmilson was presented to the press as a Villarreal player early on Monday afternoon and insisted that he expects to fight for trophies with the team that finished second to Real Madrid in the season just ended.

"Whenever I assume a challenge, I put my maximum effort into achieving it, just like every football player and normal person does," he told the reporters in attendance.

"People may think that a player of 31 years of age would come here to rest, but I come to help Villarreal grow as a team and to fight for titles."

The Brazilian defender-cum-midfielder has struggled with injuries in recent times, but is certain that those problems are now behind him.

"The fact that I am still in good condition was the reason I decided to join such an ambitious side, because if there had been a problem with my knee or anything else then it would have shown up in the medical exams I underwent before signing," he affirmed.

As the conference drew to a close, Edmilson was asked what he saw as the major differences between Villarreal and his former club Barcelona.

"I will be able to enjoy myself here. That does now mean that there will not be pressure on us as a team, but that there is a unique philosophy here and I believe that can take us to glory," he concluded.

Llorente Completes Valladolid-Villarreal Switch

The Yellow Submarine will unveil the 28-year-old striker on Tuesday at 12:30pm at El Madrigal stadium.

The Basque forward signs on a Bosman deal from Valladolid, with whom he had been since 2005. Last season - his first in the Primera - saw him net a fine total of 17 goals, making him joint-seventh highest scorer in the Liga and responsible for fully a third of the Pucela's goals.

Along with his fellow netter of 17, Zaragoza's Ricardo Oliveira, he was the only one of the top ten goalscorers to be in the lower half of the table at the campaign's end.

The former Real Sociedad youth has spent the bulk of his professional career at another Basque outfit, SD Eibar, before heading west three seasons ago.

Llorente is Villarreal's second signing of the new campaign, following ex-Barcelona man Edmílson to Vila-Real.

Zambrano Earns Recre Extension

Zambrano was promoted from his role as B team coach when the club parted company with Victor Munoz in February and successfully led the team to survival, although did so by going down to the wire on the final day of the season.

Nevertheless, the achievement in itself was enough for him to earn the trust of president Francisco Mendoza, who confirmed that Zambrano would stay in charge for next season at a press conference on Friday.

The coach was delighted to have been given the chance to continue his work at Recre and is looking for a steady improvement from the side next season.

"We are going to work hard in order to continue our growth as far as our humble resources and common sense will take us," he told reporters.

"We will only keep the players that want to be here and are willing to commit fully to achieving our objectives."

New Goalkeeping Coach

As well as the extension for Zambrano, Recre also announced their replacement for Tottenham bound goalkeeping coach Hans Leitert.

The new man charged with training the keepers at the Nuevo Colombino is José Manuel Santisteban, who enjoyed two spells with the club as a player in the mid-nineties and leaves a similar role at Cartagena to join Zambrano's coaching team.

Stoichkov To Assist Guardiola?

Guardiola and Stoichkov played together for five years as part of Johan Cruyff's 'Dream Team' era at the Camp Nou and could now be set to link up once more according to a report in 'Meridian Mach'.

The Bulgarian daily's "secret sources" suggest that Stoichkov has already entered into a verbal agreement with Barça to take up the position as assistant to Guardiola and will travel to Barcelona early next week to put pen to paper on the contract.

Stoichkov has coaching experience from his three year spell in charge of the Bulgarian national team and a short stint at Celta Vigo, where he was unable to save the team from relegation to the Segunda Division.

He has suggested in recent weeks that the club should seriously look into signing Tottenham Hotspur's Bulgarian striker Dimitar Berbatov, who was one of ten players that 'Sport' reported as being Barça's transfer targets for the summer.

The 42 year old is currently in Sofia to take part in a match to commemorate the 60th anniversary of CSKA Sofia - the club at which his career really began to take off. He is joined by businessmen from the city of Barcelona, who are contemplating the construction of a solar power plant in the area.

Ronaldinho Won't Rush For Milan - Agent

Milan, who missed out on a place in next season’s Champions League after finishing only fifth in Serie A, remain determined to reach an agreement with Barca for Ronaldinho despite a protracted transfer saga.

However, the Brazilian international, who is back home in Porto Alegre this week, is in no rush to see his future resolved, according to his brother and agent Roberto de Assis.

"In his view, the best thing to do is wait for the two clubs to find an agreement freely and without pressure, there is no hurry," he said.

"Transfers for the 2008-09 season end on August 30 and preseason for teams are scheduled starting from July 19 and we are only in May now."

French newspaper L'Equipe claim that English side Manchester City are now the only other remaining serious bidder for the services of Ronaldinho.

Manchester City

Despite having previously been linked with the likes of Chelsea and Manchester United, only City owner Thaksin Shinawatra has shown a firm interest, with the former Thai Prime Minister believing that a big-name signing is required to fill the City of Manchester Stadium. Meanwhile, City are also chasing Ronaldinho’s team-mate Deco. As reported earlier, Assis has already met with one of Shinawatra's associates.

30-year-old Deco is also available this summer and City are reportedly ahead in the running to secure the signature of the Brazilian-born Portuguese playmaker, who’s career seems to have stagnated over the past twelve months, while rumours persist over another Barca star, Thierry Henry.

Ronaldo D-Day In Two Weeks

The Portuguese international's future with the Red Devils has been the subject of intense speculation since Real Madrid's president, Ramón Calderón, expressed his wish to bring in the Premier League hot-shot.

Although the 23-year-old has spoken of his will to stay at Manchester United on multiple occasions, he unveiled upon his arrival in Lisbon that his future may in fact only be decided in a couple of weeks.

"I do not have anything with Real Madrid," Ronaldo said. "I have a contract with Manchester United and it is with my club that I will speak to. There can be further news in the next two weeks."

Ronaldo, meanwhile, stated that he is committed to "repeating or improving" this season's performances next campaign.

On Portugal's chances at Euro 2008, Ronaldo added: "It would be fantastic to be European champion for Portugal. It is a hard dream, but we are thinking game by game.

"The first game in the group stage will be crucial. We have conditions to create a great squad."

Ronaldo and Manchester United team-mate, Nani, will now travel to Viseu, where the Portuguese national squad are currently training.

Barça To Seal Keita Deal

The Mali international is now set to become Barça's first signing for the new campaign after just one season of play with the Sevillistas.

The 28-year-old had a meeting today with Barcelona's director of football, Txiki Begiristain, and vice-presidents Marc Ingla and Ferran Soriano to agree personal terms with the Catalan club.

Keita will reportedly join Barcelona for a fee of €14 million - the figure set in his release clause at Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán.

The former Marseille player is expected to undergo a medical on Monday, although it is reported that he passed a medical today, with the permission of Sevilla.

Either way, the African player will only be announced in June, after Josep Guardiola is confirmed as the club's new coach, which in turn will only happen when Barcelona B finish their season.

Keita, who joined Sevilla from Lens for a fee worth €3.4 million, made 29 Liga appearances for the Spanish club this season, netting three goals.

Edu Rejects Betis Extension

Betis waited until the end of the season before entering into contract extension talks with any of their players and have received a significant rebuttal with the news that Edu has rejected their offer of a renewal.

The attacking midfielder has spent four years at Betis since he joined from Celta Vigo, but felt that the new deal undervalued his importance to the club and has therefore turned down the offer.

Edu seems keen to sit out the final year of his contract in order to move on a free transfer next summer, but indicated that he was willing to follow the club's wishes if they decide to move him on while he still has some market value.

"I have been in Spain for eight years and I am very happy here. It is clear that I have built up a good relationship with the club during my time at Betis and for that reason I will do whatever the club sees fit," he told Marca.

Villarreal are thought to be preparing a swap deal involving Guille Franco in order to obtain Edu's services, and Betis may be willing to enter into negotiations now as opposed to watching the Brazilian leave for nothing at the end of next season.

Schuster: Ronaldo Will End Up At Madrid

Ronaldo stated less than 24 hours ago that he was "staying" with Manchester United, but nonetheless some have picked up on the choice of wording he used elsewhere to speculate that he ma still have his eye on a move.

Among these is Schuster, who is not known to be a man to mince his words.

"Sooner of later, Cristiano Ronaldo will wear white," he boomed to Noticias Cuatro.

What's more, he defended his side's recent attempts to coax the Portuguese ace via the media to the Spanish capital.

"If there is any possibility of our recruiting him then Real Madrid have to try," he reasoned.

Despite the winger's "non-transferable" status at Old Trafford, he remains Los Merengues' main target for the summer transfer window.

González Praises Getafe

The 19-year-old, who is currently on loan at Gimnàstic de Tarragona from Real Madrid, has signed for Getafe for an undisclosed fee following good displays for the second-division side.

González considers Getafe, who reached the Quarter-finals of the UEFA Cup this season, to be the best team for a young player to develop.

"I come to Getafe with big goals. I want to help the club to do better than in this campaign, which was excellent. It is the perfect place for a youngster, because they bet on them and give them minutes of play," González said.

The Real Madrid midfielder revealed, meanwhile, that Getafe could increase the quality of the squad by signing some of the footballers at the Real Madrid reserve squad.

"If Soldado arrived, he would be a great addition," he explained. "José Callejón is a natural goal-scorer that can score goals in just a few minutes. Parejo has a lot of quality and he could be a good replacement for Rubén De la Red."

However, González has indicated that his mind is now on helping Gimnàstic avoid the drop to the second division B, saying: "Nástic have been able to stay out of the bottom places and we hope to continue like this until the end."

The left-sided midfielder, who is the son of former Real Madrid legend, Míchel, added that he could have stayed at Real Madrid, but he opted to play for Gimnàstic as he would not be given many chances with Los Merengues.

"It was very hard to leave my family. One of the reasons that made me want to go to Getafe is to be close to home. My father can give me good advices," he added.

González is now Getafe's fourth signing for the new campaign, following the transfers of Rafael López, Eugen Polanski and Ibrahim Kas.

Coloccini Flattered By Barcelona Interest

The Argentina international was one of Depor's top players last season, meaning that he's attracted the attention of several larger clubs.

Barcelona are said to be among them, with the 26-year-old apparently thrilled to bits by the Catalan side's alleged interest.

While he told Ona FM that he was "very happy" in A Coruña, he did admit that the prospect of a move to a Champions League club was an intriguing one.

"I've always said that I'm very comfortable here, and the club treat me very well, but every player is ambitious and wants to play for the top titles," he said.

"Who can say no to a club like Barça, which is one of the biggest in the world?"

Caution

However, the former AC Milan fringe man knows that there has been no official move for him yet.

"Rumours have emerged in the press, but there's been no approach for me so far," he said.

"I'm calm here in La Coruña. The important thing is that I remain so and keep on working, doing well for my club and prove that the rumours are justified."

Coloccini is also said to be under the watch of Real Madrid.

Jonás Confirms Mallorca Exit

Jonás, 25, has come to the end of his two year loan from Vélez Sársfield and with Mallorca unable to afford the €8million fee that the Argentine club are requesting for his services, the midfielder has played his last game for the Islanders.

"The truth is that I am not particularly pleased with the way things have ended, but I go away content because of what I have achieved at Mallorca and the fact that I had an opportunity to play in Spain," he told Marca.

"My relationship with the president has always been the same as it has been with everyone at the club, although it is true that the technical secretary and me have not exchanged words. Having said that, I leave without being annoyed with anyone."

The Argentine international was linked with a move to Portsmouth during the January transfer window and hopes that he will get the opportunity to continue his career in Europe.

"I do not know where I will be next season, but my desire is to continue playing in Europe. Hopefully something will come up that is good for all parties," he affirmed.

"I cannot regret the fact that I couldn't move in Janaury because Mallorca didn't want me to leave in the middle of the season. I have always that everything happens for a reason and the same is true in football."

As the interview drew to a close, Jonás had some kind words for the Mallorca supporters.

"There are no words to describe how grateful I am to the supporters. When I came across some fans in Palma, they all told me that they wanted me to stay on," he concluded.

Jiménez Resigned To Alves Exit

Alves has long been linked with a move to Barcelona, but despite Sevilla president Jose Maria Del Nido being ready to play hardball with the Catalans over the transfer fee, Jiménez suggested that the Brazilian's departure is all but certain.

"Unfortunately it doesn't look like we will be able to retain [Alves] but such work is for the technical body and if he does depart then they will have to find a new Alves who can come in and do just as well," he told the radio station of the organisation blanquirroja.

Jiménez somewhat disparagingly indicated that Alves "has not the player we saw in previous years," during the current campaign and although the full-back has a contract with the club until 2012, it seems unlikely that it will be fulfilled.

Moving on the general transfer talk, Jiménez explained that Sevilla do not have the financial resources of the big two in Spain, but believes that they can compete with them due to the hard work of all the staff at the club.

"We are a great team, but we do not have the chequebook of Real Madrid or Barcelona. We are a great team because of the great effort we put in across the organisation," he concluded.

Valencia Track Zapater And García

A number of Zaragoza players, including the likes of Ricardo Oliveira, Diego Milito and Pablo Aimar look set to leave La Romareda following their demotion to the Segunda Division and it seems that Zapater and García could follow.

Zapater is a clear favourite of the Zaragoza faithful having come up through the club's youth academy and established himself as a worthy member of the first team with consistently determined performances in the centre of midfield.

He is the current team captain and although he has, thus far, been overlooked at international level, the twenty-two year old is seen as one of the best young defensive midfielders in Spain.

García, on the other hand, has caught the attention of national team coach Luis Aragones and has been named in Spain's 23-man squad for this summer's European Championships.

The twenty-four year old has been linked with English side Tottenham Hotspur in recent times as his stock continues to rise and it is not surprise to see Valencia taking an interest in the forward.

Valencia vice-president Rafael Salom made initial contact with the players' agent before his resignation and the details of the meeting have been passed on to Juan Sanchez in order to take the talks further if he sees fit.

Players will have to be sold to balance the books before Valencia are in a position to make any signings of their own, but once that is the case, it seems that Zapater and García will be among the first moves made.

Pirés: Raúl-Aragonés Is Like Me And Domenech

The Villarreal man has come up against the Real Madrid captain this season, but that's not where their connections begin and end.

Indeed, the former Arsenal winger believes that his treatment under France national team boss Raymond Domenech puts him on a par with Raúl due to his controversies with Spain coach Luis Aragonés.

Pirés told As.com, "I'm not disappointed that I don't get to go to Euro 2008 because I knew it would happen. Everyone knows that I have a problem with the manager, a bit like Raúl and Aragonés," he said.

"Still, that's life."

The veteran added that France can still go on to win the Euros without him as they have "many quality players."

And while he takes an interest in the national side, he admitted that he probably won't be watching many of the France matches unless they reach the final four.

"I've been lucky enough to win the Euros with France, but now I'm planning on disconnecting for a while before building for next season, which will be very tough."

Spanish Debate: What Makes Pellegrini Stand Out?

South American players have become an integral part of Spain's footballing culture and a great many of them are forever linked with success. From Di Stefano to Santos, Ronaldo to Ronaldinho, the cream of talent from the region has inspired many a Spanish team to victory over the years.

The same cannot be said of coaches from the region. Since César Luis Menotti's generally barren spell at Barcelona in the early eighties, a number of South America's finest coaching talents have tested themselves in Spain without a great deal of success. Carlos Bianchi, Carlos Alberto Parreira, Washington Tabárez, Miguel Ángel Russo, Gustavo Benítez, Marcelo Bielsa, Vanderlei Luxemburgo... the list is seemingly endless.

Héctor Cúper came close to titles on numerous occasions with Valencia, but his record in Spain – and elsewhere - since then has somewhat blotted his copy book. Troubled spells at Mallorca and Real Betis perhaps indicate that much of his success with Los Che was piggybacked on the team that Claudio Ranieri had built before leaving for Atlético Madrid in 1999.

In fact, the only two coaches from the region that have won trophies on a fairly consistent basis both spent the majority of playing careers in Europe: Helenio Herrera – who among other achievements, won four La Liga titles with Atlético Madrid and Barcelona – in France and Alfredo Di Stefano – a La Liga, Copa del Rey and Cup Winners Cup winner with Valencia – in Spain itself.

However, in recent years another coach has emerged who defies the logic that explains the success of Herrera and Di Stefano. A coach who took a team that first tasted top flight football in 1998 to the semi-finals of the Champions League in 2006 and to a best-ever league finish of second place in the season just ended. That coach is Manuel Pellegrini.

While Pellegrini has had the fortune to coach a club with steady long-term ambitions, a sensible board of directors and an extensive South American scouting network – something that neither Bianchi or Luxemburgo were, for instance, blessed with – perhaps primary to his success in Spain has been his ability to adapt tactically to the rigours of the European game in a way that so few of his contemporaries have been able to.

In his first season with Villarreal, Pellegrini inherited a squad with players suited to the classic South American 4-4-2 diamond formation. He had Juan Román Riquelme at the top of the diamond, Josico, Marcos Senna or Sebastián Battaglia at the bottom, Hector Font on the right and Juan Sorín on the left. He stuck with the tactics that he was comfortable with from his time with San Lorenzo and River Plate in Argentina, and led the team to a superb third place in his debut season.

The top four finish gave Villarreal a crack at the Champions League for the 2005/06 season and while Pellegrini often employed a solitary striker in La Liga, the diamond was his preferred formation for Europe's premier competition. The signing of Alessio Tacchinardi allowed Marcos Senna to spend more time on the right of the diamond, a position in which he flourished, attracting the attention of Manchester United with some excellent performances throughout Villarreal's Champions League campaign.

Riquelme ran the show as Villarreal played some superb football on their way to the semi-finals, where they were a saved penalty away from taking Arsenal to extra time in the second leg at El Madrigal. However, cracks were starting to appear in La Liga. Whenever Riquelme was absent from the team, neither Roger or Guayre were anywhere near as effective as the play-maker, and Villarreal suffered as a result, finishing the season in seventh.

Pellegrini had much to muse over during the summer and the signing of Robert Pires from Arsenal held the key to understanding his tactical thinking for the season ahead. Having observed that Riquelme had become the irreplaceable focal point of the team, Pellegrini wanted to find a more fluid style of play that was less reliant on any one player and would counteract the stiffness that Villarreal had shown at times in the previous campaign.

His solution was to employ a variation of 4-4-2, in which two central midfielders would generally hold, while two attacking midfielders were given freedom to roam from initial wide positions in the attacking third. His plans were dealt a blow when Pires picked up a serious injury in pre-season, but he persevered, using Riquelme and Ruben Cani in the attacking roles in the early part of the 2006/07 season.

The new formation was not a great success and the relationship between Riquelme and Pellegrini started to deteriorate, culminating in Villarreal's 4-1 defeat at home to Osasuna in December. Riquelme was shipped out on loan to Boca Juniors in January and Pellegrini decided to revert back to a central play-maker, with new signing Matias Fernandez fulfilling the role. Pires returned from injury in time for the final stretch of the campaign and inspired the club to a eight straight victories, taking them to a fifth-placed finish.

Pellegrini's initial attempts to integrate his new formation had been largely unsuccessful, but that was all set to change. Villarreal's summer transfer dealings saw Santi Cazorla return from his loan spell at Recreativo and Diego Forlan replaced with Giuseppe Rossi. With some other minor changes to the squad, Pellegrini now had the players at his disposal to play the sort of football he had envisioned at the start of the previous campaign.

Villarreal began the season in fine fettle with five wins from their first six games, and despite some indifferent form in the middle part of the season, they picked up once more going into the final stretch, overtaking Barcelona and confirming a second place finish.

Pires belied his increasing age with some excellent performances, while Cazorla was able to reproduce the form that had seen him lead the goal assist charts during his year at Recreativo. In fact, such was the consistent level of Cazorla's displays that Spain coach Luis Aragones called him up to the national squad for this summer's European Championships.

With Cani and Fernandez providing ample back-up in the attacking midfield positions and January signing Sebastian Eguren proving to be the ideal partner for Senna in the centre of midfield, Pellegrini's vision is finally beginning to take hold. Rossi has forged an excellent understanding with Nihat Kahveci up front and there is certainly a more free-flowing nature to Villarreal's attacking play compared to seasons past.

Greater defensive solidity came with the signing of imposing goalkeeper Diego Lopez, while Diego Godin and Gonzalo Rodriguez have established a formidable partnership in the centre of the back four. All in all, Villarreal are beginning to look like serious long-term challengers.

The likes of Sol Campbell, Edmilson, Cristian Villagra, Mane, Joseba Llorente and Diego Valeri have already linked with summer moves as Pellegrini looks to improve the squad and it is clear that the Villarreal board are fully behind their coach. The tactics are now in place and next season will be a case of Pellegrini taking what he has learnt this season and making a few subtle tweaks in order to improve the formula.

If his time at the club so far is anything to go by then it is totally possible that Pellegrini could lead Villarreal even closer to the Primera Division title next season. With a Champions League campaign sure to bring greater exposure to his work, it would not be at all surprising to see Europe's biggest clubs vying to secure his signature come the end of the next campaign.

Whether or not he would want to leave the calm atmosphere of El Madrigal, however, is another matter entirely.

Bojan Out Of Catalunya Squad To Face Argentina

The coach, Pere Gratacós, told Sport that his decision not to summon the youngster was primilarly because the player might otherwise have encountered "problems", given that he won't in Austria and Switzerland with La Furia Roja.

Bojan's absence, as well as the presence at Euro 2008 of a few key players, means that the side has a makeshift look to it in places.

Carles Puyol and Xavi Hernández of Barcelona, Francesc Fàbregas of Arsenal, Real Zaragoza's Sergio García, Fernando Navarro of RCD Mallorca and Joan Capdevila of Villarreal will all miss the Argentina clash due to their Spanish commitments.

However, with no Espanyol players set to take part, Gratacós can call on many perequitos: in fact, he's chosen no fewer than five.

Santi Triguero, a striker with Tercera side Vilanova, could be in line for a debut, while the longest-serving player in the squad is Deportivo midfielder Sergio Gonàlez, who has ten caps.

The Selecció's encounter with the Albiceleste will be their first match since the 1-1 draw with Euskalherria (the Basque Country) on December 29 last year, and their first with a FIFA-recognised team since the 2-0 win over Costa Rica in 2006.

The squad for the Camp Nou encounter, which will take place on May 24, is as follows:

Goalkeepers: Víctor Valdés (Barcelona), José Miguel Morales (Terrassa)

Defenders: David García (Espanyol), Javier Chica (Espanyol), Bruno Saltor (Almería), Carlos García (Almería), David Belenguer (Getafe), Gerard Piqué (Manchester United), Albert Lopo (Deportivo La Coruña.)

Midfielders: Ángel Martínez (Espanyol), Ferran Corominas (Espanyol), Sergio (Deportivo La Coruña), Óscar Serrano (Racing Santander), Luís García (Atlético Madrid), Gerard López (Recreativo)

Attackers: Jonathan Soriano (Espanyol), Joan Verdú (Deportivo La Coruña), Santi Triguero (Vilanova i la Geltrú).

La Liga Team Of The Week: Round 38

While fewer than half of the games had anything at stake, there was no shortage of goalmouth action in La Liga's final week. True, some games - most notably Getafe and Betis' 1-1 draw - passed without too much incident, as did Almería's 3-1 win at Espanyol. But Sevilla took out their frustrations on Athletic by four goals to one, while Valencia punished a lethargic Atlético 3-1. Villarreal capped a memorable season with a 2-0 win over high-flying Deportivo at the Riazor, while the day before, Murcia were swept aside 5-3 by Barcelona. Not to be outdone, Real Madrid preceded their trohpy presentation with a 5-2 win over Levante.

In the games with true meaning, Real Zaragoza succumbed to relegation against a buoyant Mallorca side after the islanders won 3-2 at San Moix, while Valladolid and Recreativo both stay up after their 1-1 draw in Huelva. Osasuna couldn't do enough to gain a point at Racing, meaning that the Santander men advance to the UEFA Cup after a dramatic, 1-0 win.

This week's XI lines up 4-4-2.

Sergio Asenjo
Sergio Ramos - Albiol - César Navas - Capdevila
Felipe Melo - Guti - Giovani - Courtois
Kanouté - David Villa

Goalkeeper

Sergio Asenjo (Valladolid): He succumbed to a goal only in the 93rd minute, by which time his side was safe anyway. The young 'keeper has enjoyed a brilliant debut season, and he capped it off with a wonderful showing in Huelva against Recreativo.

Defenders

Sergio Ramos (Real Madrid): Ramos is included not so much for his defensive performance as his attacking nous. It was a Dani Alves-esque showing from the Spanish international, who was a constant thorn in in the side of the Granota.

Raúl Albiol (Valencia): A season to forget for Valencia, but still a performance to remember for Albiol. Not until Agüero came on did he look ruffled, and even then he was the best of the Che back four.

César Navas (Racing): Calm, confident stuff: his presence ensured that what was a depleted Racing back line didn't rest on their laurels.

Capdevila (Villarreal): Yes, Capdevila again. It's true that Depor had their chances against Villarreal at the Riazor, but the Catalan helped secure a clean sheet for his side and put in a power of work further forward, culminating in an assist for Guille Franco

Midfielders

Félipe Melo (Almería): A great performance, complete with a goal, for the Brazilian. The 24-yaer-old bade farewell to his rojiblanco teammates with a showing that will have his new employers at Fiorentina licking their lips in anticipation. He could very well grace the Champions League next season - a fine reward for a fine season.

Guti (Real Madrid): The master of the deft assist, Guti showed his true worth as he exploited any given gap in the Levante defence to provide the blanco attackers with chances. Here he did what he does best.

Giovani Dos Santos (Barcelona): A masterful display from a kid who Barcelona have just found out might be an attacking midfielder instead of a forward. A hat-trick's just the half of it: this was brash, energetic and scintillating stuff; it was "only" Murcia, but he still did everything right.

Laurent Courtois (Levante): He and Alex Geijo ensured that the Bernabéu encounter wasn't a rout: a good, old-fashioned, left-wing performance helped his side towards a respectable two-goal tally.

Strikers

Fredi Kanouté (Sevilla): Two goals and a return to form for the Malian. There was no arguing with his performance, one that was reminiscent of happier times last season.

David Villa (Valencia): The same goes for Villa, who gave the Che fans what is quite possibly the last ever glimpse of his scoring a brace in the hallowed Valencia shirt. Confident stuff.

Honourable Mentions

Ruud Van Nistelrooy comes first: any other week would have seen him in the side, but the exploits of Villa and Kanouté see him as the "third striker." Ricardo Oliveira is the fourth: his side went down, but he worked so hard. Webó and Güiza formed Pa great double act for their tormentors.

Diego López can't stop putting in great performances for Villarreal, and he continued that. 'Matigol' Fernádez was equally as impressive. Eidur Gudjohnsen was on song for Barcelona, as was Thierry Henry. Most of the Real Madrid side did well, too, not least Mahamadou Diarrà, Marcelo and Wesley Sneijder. David Cortés did everything right for Getafe against Betis, except when he missed a penalty, while Pédro López wasn't half bad for Valladolid.

Iván Bolado managed a season-saving goal for Racing despite being on the pitch a mere twenty minutes, so he gets the final mention.

Alves Wants Swift Departure

Alves, 25, has been strongly linked with a move to Barcelona in recent weeks and although he wouldn't reveal his next destination, he does hope that a deal will be concluded shortly that sees him move away from the Sanchez Pizjuan.

"My desire is to leave as soon as possible and I hope that negotiations are completed in the near future, although you never know what can happen," he told reporters outside the club's training facilities on Monday.

The Brazilian full-back was expected to leave Sevilla last summer, only for club president Jose Maria Del Nido to reject a size-able bid from Chelsea for his services - a decision that caused a lot of tension between Alves and the club.

Despite sporting director Ramon Monchi indicating that they are yet to receive what they deem as an acceptable offer for his services, Alves is convinced that his time in Seville has come to an end and that he will be moving on in time for next season.

"We all now leave for our summer vacations, but I definitely won't return. This has been known for a while and is certain," he concluded.

Txiki On Pique, Transfer Plans

A report in the Daily Mail suggested that Barça were close to agreeing a £6million deal to re-sign Pique, who came through the youth ranks at the Catalan giants before joining United in 2004, and Txiki has confirmed that negotiations are ongoing.

"Talks are at a very advanced stage," he told reporters on Monday. "He is one of the players that we are most interested in."

If Pique does sign on the dotted line then he would become the first signing of what is seen as a new era at the Camp Nou, with Josep Guardiola ready to take the reigns from Frank Rijkaard and attempt to lead the team back to the top after two seasons with a trophy.

Much Activity

There are expected to be a number of comings and goings at the club in the next few months and Txiki confirmed that Jose Manuel Pinto, Lilian Thuram, Edmilson and Santiago Ezquerro will all leave when their current contract expire over the summer.

Brazilian full-back Silvinho will be offered a new contract as "he has done well when called upon" and "has a good influence in the dressing room," but his compatriot Ronaldinho and Portuguese midfielder Deco will both be on their way out.

Txiki suggested that there is a possibly that Samuel Eto'o could depart over the summer, although insisted that the four signings from last summer - Eric Abidal, Gabi Milito, Yaya Toure and Thierry Henry - would all remain at Barça for next season.

New Coach

With Guardiola set to take charge at the end of May, Txiki - who played alongside Guardiola during the 'dream team' years - is glad to have someone coming in that understands "the philosophy of the club and how things work on a day-to-day basis."

He also indicated that Guardiola had already made some requests to the board as to changes that he would like to see implemented in time for next season.

"We have not imposed anything on him. He has requested some changes from us in relation to the control he has over the team and we are analysing those requests in order to conclude whether or not they can be carried out," he concluded.

Casillas Dedicates Zamora Trophy To Teammates

The Mostolés-born stopper shipped only 32 goals in 36 games this season - the same as last year's winner, Roberto 'Pato' Abbonzanieri of Getafe.

He said to the Real Madrid website after receiving his award, "The truth is that I'm very excited by this. But this is an award that I must share with the rest of the team, who have been fantastic all season. Without them I could not have done it.

"Nobody likes conceding goals and that's especially true of goalkeepers, but given the average of recent years I'm not complaining about this total. Plus, Real Madrid always attack. That's why we need to give credit to the defenders and the whole team - we all attack so we all must defend, and that's what gave us this total."

Special Case

Casillas is a special case among Madrid 'keepers for this reason, as the stopper himself noted.

"Being a low-conceding 'keeper at Madrid is difficult for the attacking reasons, as well as others such as pressure and the need to concentrate.

"It's been 16 years since a Madrid 'keeper won? That's a long time. I believe that a Madrid goalie must always fight for this award, just as the strikers aim for the 'Pichichi' trophy. That's good for the team, and means that we're fighting for the Liga as well as other tournaments.

"My message to the other 'keepers? The same as I've said: this is a great honour and a source of pride. They won it before and I know from experience how hard one must fight and work to gain it. For me, as a goalkeeper and a Madridista, I'm proud to have followed those who made history."

Robinho: I'm Not Leaving Madrid

The Brazilian has found himself increasingly ostracised from the first eleven in recent weeks as Arjen Robben takes over the left wing role.

Rumours of extracurricular indiscretions abound, too, but the man himself is eager to point out that he'll still be a Madrid player next year.

He did this while stating that he didn't hear the whistles from some of the fans that were apparently directed towards him during his side's 5-2 win over Levante.

"I just heard applause," he shrugged to Marca.

"This won't be my last title with Madrid because I'm going nowhere. I'm going to be here for years.

"I'm delighted for the trophy that we won this season. It's well deserved. We are just winners and now we'll celebrate with our fans."

He added, "We're champions and I'm happy with the party and the title. I hope that next season will be even better. I want to be here for many years and win many more leagues."

The Fans Deserve It - Guti

The veteran midfielder spoke to Marca after his side's 5-2 win over Levante at the Bernabéu.

"The Liga is very important to us, particularly after last season when our win signalled an end to years without titles.

"We've had a great season, and it's tremendous to win a second consecutive Liga."

Despite being pleased to lift the trophy in front of the Madrid faithful, he confided that actually sealing the title against Osasuna in Pamplona was even better.

"It's always best to win it first off, which happened in Pamplona, but the Real Madrid fans deserved a tribute like today," he said.

He admitted his disappointment, saying, "I'd have loved to have been in the selección.

"But now I just need to work hard to be at the next World Cup."

Deportivo Make Bravo Move

Bravo, 28, is out of contract at the end of the season and is seeking a move to Europe after spending his entire career with Chivas, for whom he has scored over one hundred goals since making his debut in 2001.

Racing Santander have previously shown an interest in the Mexican, but it now seems as if Deportivo are ready to jump to the head of the queue for his signature after club president Augusto César Lendoiro met with his agents during the week to initiate talks.

Lendoiro is keen to build on an excellent season half of the season and having already secured the permanent services of Angel Lafita and Filipe Luis - Christian Wilhelmsson to follow - he has his eyes set on a forward and central midfielder to fill out the squad.

Depor have been caught short in both positions during the season and Bravo would appear to be an ideal fit for the latter position, especially as he will be available on a free transfer.

If Bravo does agree terms with Depor then it would require the club to part with one of their current non-EU players in order to make space for him in the squad.

With Bravo's compatriot Andres Guarado and Canadian Julien de Guzman guaranteed two of the three slots, that would leave Uruguayan forward Sebastian Taborda as the player who would have to move on over the summer.

Henry: Just Go, Eto'o

Thierry Henry has insisted that it's time for Barcelona teammate Samuel Eto'o to make a move, further to reports linking him with Milan and Tottenham.

“If I were Sam, I would go, but I don’t decide for him,” Henry told France-Football.

Regarding the club's fans turning on the striker, Henry added: “I never, never, never experienced such a moment. The atmosphere was very hard.”

As for himself, Henry feels that he's finished the season strongly. However, he admits that he should have taken a break after moving from Arsenal last summer.

“I was injured when I moved in and for six months I did not do anything,” the former Gunner admmitted.

“Rijkaard asked me if I wanted to be apart from the group and work for two months with a physical programme.

“I told him I wanted stay with the group, but it has been a massive mistake. When you play you cannot recover.

“I scored 18 goals in all competitions, without shooting free kicks or penalties. I made 10 assists and, despite the bad results, I finished with a good series: four goals in the last three games.”

Despite not hinting that he wants to leave the Camp Nou, the France international wants his future to be crystal clear before he continues, insisting: “If I am not part of the club’s plans, it is time to be told.”

Schuster Hopes For Go-Ahead

All current indications suggest that Levante will not take part on Sunday and Schuster - a former Levante coach himself - is surprised that such a thing could happen in the Spanish top flight.

"It causes some unrest because we do not know if the game will take place or not. It is unbelievable for something like this to happen in Spain. We won't know anything more until tomorrow," he told reporters at the pre-match press conference.

"[When I was at Levante] we had problems like any other club, but never something like not being paid. The current situation hasn't always been there."

Despite his misgivings over the situation, Schuster understands the plight of the Levante players, but feels that they could have chosen a more meaningful fixture earlier in the season in which to make their point by striking.

"You have to do many things in order to attract attention when you are in a situation like theirs. They have been professional in during every match and we hope they take to the pitch tomorrow as they have in previous games," he affirmed.

"I know that a match against Real Madrid has more exposure, but I think that they could have made better use of fixtures in which things were at stake for them in order to get their point across."

Spanish Squad

Spain coach Luis Aragones announced his squad for Euro 2008 earlier on Saturday, with just two Real Madrid players making the cut, namely Iker Casillas and Sergio Ramos. Schuster was asked whether he was surprised not to see more of his players included.

"The coach has faith with the same players that he always takes with him and thus it is very hard to break into that squad. You must also remember that we have a lot of foreigners on our team," he asserted.

" Raúl believed that he could make it and I think he deserved to do so because of his great performances this year. He knew before the announcement that he wasn't included and he is calm and behaving like normal."

La Liga Preview: Real Mallorca - Real Zaragoza

When Real Zaragoza kicked off their opening game of the season against newly-promoted Real Murcia last August and lost, few would have thought that was a sign of more to come.

It was deemed to be a one off from a team that were expected to be challenging for the top six at the very least after their performance last season under Víctor Fernández.

Instead, los Maños head to the ONO Estadi in Mallorca knowing that they need at least a point to stand any chance of returning to the Balearic island for a league game next term.

The club's troubles have been well documented, with the current coach, Manolo Villanova, being the fourth of the season while the summer sales outweighed the summer purchases and appear to have left the squad thinly stretched.

Internal squabbles sometimes turned public, like with Andrés D'Alessandro's problems with Fernández which is ended with the player being loaned out for teh second half of the season.

On the pitch, the flowing football and the flurry of goals from last season failed to be repeated this time around and while Diego Milito remains popular he is not the hero he was when last term ended.

Talk at La Romareda this week has been one of optimism, even if Villanova somewhat oddly stated that their fate was in their own hands when in fact they are in 18th place and one points behind both Osasuna and Recreativo.

One Away Win

That feeling that they can achieve something must come from the quality on paper within the squad, because on grass they have not been at all good on their travels.

Zaragoza have played 18 away games this term and have won just once, while drawing five and losing 12, and they have only netted on 12 occasions while conceding 34.

Those figures do not bode well for the visit to a team that is just one place and one point behind sixth and have high hopes of pinching the final UEFA Cup spot from Racing Santander.

Mallorca are a club which are very difficult to predict at the start of any season, but for such a modest outfit their performance in the top flight since winning promotion ten years ago has been magnificent.

Two mid-table finishes in the past two seasons gave coach Gregorio Manzano something to build upon and he has done very well in the transfer market to bolster the squad.

The main arrival was Daniel Güiza from Getafe and his goals have helped lift the Balearic club into the top ten and to the cusp of another appearance in European competition.

An Intertoto Cup place is still in the offing, of course, but the Mallorca players will know that victory on Sunday coupled with Racing dropping points could mean a couple more weeks holiday this summer.

La Liga Preview: Racing - Osasuna

For Real Madrid and FC Barcelona the league season may be over and talk of summer rebuilding plans dominate the headlines, but for Racing Santander and Osasuna things are far from settled.

With just one game to go the meeting in El Sardinero on Sunday sees the host team looking to cement themselves into a UEFA Cup spot, while their visitors are desperate to stay up.

The curious thing is that at the start of the season many would have predicted that their positions would have been the other way around, given their form in recent seasons.

Racing ended last season in tenth, which was their highest position since the 1993-94 campaign, the year after they returned to the Spanish top flight after a long absence.

Since then, the majority of years has seen the Cantabrian club battling against the drop, a struggle that they lost in 2000-01, before bouncing straight back up a season later.

Things changed last summer when Marcelino was brought in, somewhat surprisingly, after he had resigned following a relatively successful spell with Recreativo.

There were few indicators about what was to come and many predicted that Racing would once again jostle to stay up and almost as many said that they would not even achieve that.

Euro Dream

Far from just achieving that, however, Racing have been in the top ten nearly all season and in the European places for the past few weeks, with a Champions League spot even an outside possibility at one stage.

They currently lie in sixth place and are just one point ahead of Mallorca, who take on another relegation struggler in the shape of Real Zaragoza at rthe ONO Estadi.

After all that the team have been through they would, and rightly so, consider their season to be a failure if they do not now book their place in Europe for next term.

Their guests on Sunday reach the UEFA Cup semi finals last season could have built on that in order to try and push themselves back into the competition for next term.

Instead, their impressive home record has not been so impressive and while things have not improved on the road, Osasuna now go into the final match needing a win, or Zaragoza to lose, in order to stay up.

Last term the club finished 14th, but that was only 12 months after they had pinched fourth place and qualified for the Champions League qualifiers, which they ultimately lost.

That defeat did not serve them badly as they went on to enjoy a good run in the UEFA Cup, but with few strong signings last summer and some key players leaving, the team has struggled this season in the league.
